You get what you paid for… Game Review of ‘Bellwright’

Donkey Crew, in partnership with Snail Games USA, today launched the console port of their medieval survival RPG, Bellwright. I’m grateful for the reviewing opportunity, but unfortunately, I was disappointed. This is surprising as the game seemed to be well-liked on STEAM, and if there’s a group of gamers who like to complain more about the slightest thing, it’s PC gamers.

In Bellwright, players can make their own character and set out to start their own village/community in their realm, that’s now become quite hostile. That’s pretty much what I can figure out, as one of the first issues I have with this game comes up. You’re just dropped into the game, no introduction, no exposition, just start the game and figure out the controls right off the bat, as there’s no tutorial (even though I selected in the options to have it).

Once I figured out how to play, I started my mission…and got stuck, as in soft locked. After meeting the character I assume is the one who will get the game started for us, either I look for a good place to start anew, OR rest at his camp…there’s no prompt to sleep or to go forth and look for a new place.

So, at the time of writing this (At the game’s console launch!), the game is unplayable. Another glaring thing to me about the game is that it looks and feels like corners were cut, and unfortunately, it looks like the cuts were made in the graphics and voice acting, that’s right folks! We have clankers in this game, and they’re not even that good! I guess there are real voice actors in the game, but it’s hard to tell who is real and who isn’t. There’s a glaring difference between what the game actually looks like and what is shown in the trailers.

The game’s lighting system is probably one of the only good things this game has going for it, in my opinion.

Overall, for what you’re paying for, the game is about $19-$23, but as I’m warning, you’re getting what you paid for. Personally, I would avoid it or wait till the price has dropped significantly. Unfortunately, this game did not port over well onto the console, and shame on those who didn’t put the effort into this.
