If you have a mild case of thalassophobia,20th Century Studios is ready to unlock a whole new tier of ocean-based anxiety. The studio has officially unleashed the first teaser trailer for Whalefall. It’s a survival drama about a man who gets inadvertently eaten alive. Directed by Brian Duffield (No One Will Save You), the pulse-pounding thriller is officially locked in to swim into theaters just in time for the spooky season on October 16, 2026.
In a brilliant marketing move, the two-minute trailer avoids the standard blockbuster habit of spoiling the entire plot. Instead, the footage focuses almost entirely on a single continuous, real-time nightmare sequence. In the movie, a deep-sea diver is caught in a battle between a massive sperm whale and a giant squid. However, it gets worse when he is vacuumed into the whale’s belly.
Based on the celebrated bestselling novel by Daniel Kraus. It sees Jay Gardiner (Austin Abrams, Weapons) go diving off the central coast of California on a desperate search to recover the remains of his deceased, estranged father. Unfortunately, he gets swallowed whole by an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale.
Trapped inside the pitch-black, churning inner mechanics of a multi-stomached leviathan, Jay has exactly one hour of oxygen left in his tank to navigate his way out before he’s completely digested.
An All-Star Crew
The film reportedly plays out almost entirely on the claustrophobic shoulders of Abrams as he fights off nature (and a stray squid inside the whale’s belly). Duffield has anchored the narrative with a spectacular supporting lineup to handle the psychological and emotional weight of the story:
Josh Brolin steps into the frame as Jay’s rugged, complicated father via crucial, survival-guiding flashbacks. Elisabeth Shue (Piranha 3D), John Ortiz (Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem), Jane Levy (Evil Dead), and Emily Rudd (Fear Street) round out the primary cast.
Behind the scenes, the practical effects wizards at Weta actually built the inside of the whale’s stomach to keep the environmental dread completely authentic. Check out the Whalefall footage right now—and maybe think twice before booking that scuba trip.
