If you thought Evil Dead alum Lou Taylor Pucci learned his lesson about opening sketchy, ancient books back in 2013, Dark Castle Entertainment is here to prove that some people never learn.
Pucci is officially back in the literary danger zone in the first trailer for Lockbox, the latest supernatural thriller from The Last Exorcism director Daniel Stamm.
From Your Headphones to the Big Screen
The film serves as a highly anticipated big-screen adaptation of a fan-favorite episode from the hit anthology podcast Knifepoint Horror. Created by Soren Narnia, the story was adapted for film by Emmy-winning playwright Justin Yoffe.
For those unfamiliar with the source material, Knifepoint Horror has racked up over 10 million downloads since 2010. And it operates under the SpectreVision Radio banner—the audio network founded by Elijah Wood, Daniel Noah, and Josh C. Waller.
The cinematic adaptation has assembled an absolute Mount Rushmore of modern scream queens to anchor the dread. Carla Gugino, the undisputed MVP of Mike Flanagan ‘sverse (The Haunting of Hill House, Gerald’s Fall of the House of Usher), stars. She’s Katharine Isabelle, the legendary genre icon behind Ginger Snaps and Backrooms.
The Sinister Neighbor Next Door
The narrative of Lockbox ditches loud, cheap jump scares in favor of a suffocating, atmospheric slow-burn:
Seeking a quiet place, Ellen (Gugino) retreats to an isolated rural town, bringing along her severely traumatized cousin, Winthrop. Their fragile attempt at domestic peace shatters when a neighbor knocks on the door with a bizarre, frantic warning: Winthrop is dangerous. As bizarre, reality-bending phenomena escalate around the property. Ellen is forced to put everything on the line to defend the boy from an aggressive, otherworldly entity that has tracked him to the woods.
Producer Kearie Peak (Winthrop), who produced the feature alongside Capstone Studios, couldn’t contain excitement about Gugino’s performance:
“Lockbox captures the eerie dread that makes ‘Knifepoint Horror’ such a success. Carla Gugino is a perfect fit for the film, bringing a rare intensity and subtlety that aligns perfectly with the silent horror of Lockbox. Beneath the supernatural tension, the film explores how generational trauma festers and twists over time.”
