A Fresh Holy War

Do not expect a lazy rehash of William Friedkin’s pristine 1974 masterpiece. Do not expect a direct sequel to 2023’s’ widely panned The Exorcist: Believer, either. Instead, Flanagan is crafting an entirely original, standalone narrative set within the deeper margins of the universe.

Flanagan is openly aiming for the throat with this highly confidential script, promising an absolute gauntlet of terror. And according to his statement that it is “the scariest movie” he’s ever made, you know it has to be good, because, let’s be honest, the man is brilliant when it comes to horror.

“I really just saw an opportunity to make the scariest movie I’ve ever made.”

An Absolute Mount Rushmore of Talent

To pull off a holy resurrection of this magnitude, Flanagan has assembled an unbelievably stacked, A-list ensemble cast. The marquee lineup features Scarlett Johansson (The Avengers), Diane Lane (Unfaithful), Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years an enslaved person), Sasha Calle (The Flash), and John Leguizamo (John Wick).

Of course, it wouldn’t be a true Flanagan production without an appearance from his trusted, recurring collaborative family. That includes Carla Gugino (Gerald’s Game, The Haunting of Hill House, The Fall of the House of Usher), Kate Siegel (Hush, Midnight Mass), and Rahul Kohli (The Haunting of Bly Manor, The Fall of the House of Usher). The reunion continues with Hamish Linklater (Midnight Mass), Carl Lumbly (Doctor Sleep, The Fall of the House of Usher), Robert Longstreet (The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass), Matt Biedel (The Midnight Club, The Fall of the House of Usher), Samantha Sloyan (Midnight Mass, The Fall of the House of Usher), and John Gallagher Jr. (Hush).

The King of Modern Horror

Behind the scenes, Flanagan is producing via Red Room Pictures alongside Jason Blum for Blumhouse-Atomic. The filmmaker’s upcoming creative schedule is almost terrifyingly busy. This October, his highly anticipated television adaptation of Stephen King’s “Carrie” will premiere exclusively on Prime Video. He also wrote DC’s incoming cinematic horror venture, Clayface, which hits theaters on October 23. Furthermore, the director was recently attached to helm a brand-new adaptation of King’s iconic novella The Mist.

Mark your calendars right now. Universal Pictures will officially unleash The Exorcist into theaters worldwide on March 12, 2027. Get ready to lose your mind.
