When it comes to the summer months, two things are absolute, undeniable certainties: Georgia is hot enough to melt asphalt, and Hollywood is going to dump a truckload of shark movies onto our screens. Joining the highly competitive 2026 aquatic thriller lineup, which includes Deep Water and Chum, is The Bay from Brainstorm Media.
Practical Effects and Terrible Vacation Decisions
The movie stars Francesca Eastwood (M.F.A., Clawfoot), but the real headline here for horror purists is behind the gills. Rather than relying entirely on dodgy, weightless CGI, The Bay will feature a fully functional animatronic shark. It was built by the practical-effects wizards at Bischoff’s. What you will be seeing is a combo of the animatronic and real beasts.
Written and directed by Phil Volken, the plot keeps things lean, mean, and claustrophobic. When a tourist boat tragically sinks inside an actual, designated shark sanctuary, two best friends are forced into a brutal fight for survival as they try to navigate and escape the heavily infested waters.
Because nothing says “great vacation story” like becoming a chew toy in a protected ecological zone, the film—which also stars Alexander Wraith, Dani Oliveros, and Ta’imua—is swimming into theaters and dropping On Demand on July 17, 2026.
The Director’s Natural Habitat
If anyone knows how to make you terrified of a cruise, it’s Phil Volken. The director has practically carved out his own cinematic niche by trapping characters on the open ocean, having previously helmed the thriller Extortion (2017) and last year’s Dead Sea.
“I’ve made several films set on the open sea, and The Bay is the culmination of my experiences to date,” Volken said in an official statement. “With my crack team of regular collaborators, the movie is finely and expertly honed to maximize the combined fears of the ocean, the unknown, sharks, and ultimately, just how cold-blooded nature can be—specifically human nature. I’m delighted with the scale and performances we’ve delivered onscreen. The Bay’s going to completely immerse and terrify audiences worldwide!”
Check out the trailer below, pack your life jackets, and maybe stick to the hotel pool this July. If a shark is going to bite you in 2026, at least let it be a beautifully crafted puppet.
