Sony Pictures Animation and Amazon MGM Studios have officially announced a fifth installment in the $1.3 billion animated monster franchise: The Haunting of Hotel Transylvania.

The theatrical release marks a major homecoming for the franchise. The fourth movie—Hotel Transylvania: Transformania—skipped multiplexes entirely during the pandemic when Sony licensed it off to Amazon to stream on Prime Video. As part of that deal, Amazon earned co-producing dibs on the next chapter. Sony will handle the film’s North American distribution, while Amazon takes the reins internationally.

Management Swaps and Ghostly Guests

According to the synopsis, Dracula has finally packed his bags for a peaceful, stress-free retirement. So, Mavis, his daughter, is left to run the monster resort all on her own.

Naturally, things go downhill immediately. A wave of bizarre, unexplained, and incredibly spooky incidents begins disrupting the resort. The hotel’s reputation is on the line. So, the Drac Pack is forced to mount a full-blown investigation to uncover what—or who—is trying to haunt a hotel that’s already full of monsters.

The Creative Coven

Stepping into the director’s chairs are Jennifer Kluska (Transformania) and Alan Hawkins. To ensure the franchise’s signature chaotic energy and visual style remain perfectly intact, franchise creator Genndy Tartakovsky is returning to executive produce alongside Michelle Murdocca. Lawrence Jonas will produce. The cast has yet to be announced. But that’s not stopping fans and studio heads from celebrating the news with the monster mash.

“These films have been a cornerstone of Sony Animation’s storytelling identity, blending a unique visual style with heartfelt, character-driven comedy,” said Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville, Presidents of Sony Pictures Animation.

Courtenay Valenti, Head of Film at Amazon MGM Studios, echoed the excitement: “Hotel Transylvania is one of those rare franchises that has become a beloved tradition for families around the world – a film series that has always balanced irreverent humor with genuine heart.”
