Get ready for a brand-new, blood-soaked coronation, because Prime Video is officially bringing Stephen King’s very first masterpiece, “Carrie,” back to life. This time, the telekinetic prom queen is under the meticulous care of modern horror maestro Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass).
Entertainment Weekly dropped a massive first-look preview of “Carrie,” an eight-episode limited series slated to slice into our streaming queues this autumn. Led by Summer H. Howell (The Midnight Club) in the titular role, the series promises to completely reinvent the 50-year-old classic for a generation raised on screens and algorithms.
A Cruel, Modern High School Ecosystem
Flanagan isn’t looking to lazily replicate Brian De Palma’s iconic 1976 cinematic adaptation or King’s epistolary novel. Instead, this version takes the familiar tragedy and plugs it directly into the toxic, terrifying matrix of the social media age.
According to the official synopsis:
Misfit high‑schooler Carrie White has spent her life hidden away in her home with her fiercely protective mother, Margaret (Samantha Sloyan). Her father’s sudden, untimely death thrusts her into the unforgiving ecosystem of public high school. Carrie is forced to navigate a viral bullying scandal that tears through her community, the relentless pressure and casual cruelty of the social‑media age, and the awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers that rise alongside her adolescence.
As Flanagan explained to EW, the update feels depressingly necessary:
“The themes that Steve was talking about half a century ago of kindness versus cruelty, of empathy and bullying, and violence at school have become even more relevant today than he could have contemplated because of our relationship to technology and the degree to which violence encroaches on our high schoolers… We had an opportunity to tell a story about a modern teenage experience that could use the seeds of these characters King created 50 years ago, but express them completely differently.”
Reportedly, the series will also tell the tale of other women with powers throughout time.
The Cast: A Flana-Family Reunion
Flanagan serves as the primary writer and showrunner, while directing four of the eight episodes himself (with Amazon MGM Studios producing and Stephen King on board as an executive producer). As expected, he’s brought along an incredible ensemble of genre favorites and familiar faces from his cinematic universe:
The Mother-Daughter Duo: Summer Howell takes on the daunting mantle of Carrie White, while Flanagan regular Samantha Sloyan (The Midnight Club, Fall of the House of Usher) steps into the terrifying, fanatical boots of Margaret White.
The High School Food Chain: Siena Agudong as the empathetic Sue Snell, Alison Thornton as the venomous Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross, Josie Tota as Tina, Arthur Conti as Billy, and Thalia Dudek as Emaline.
The Faculty: Pre-order your gym class uniform, because the legendary Amber Midthunder (Prey) is stepping in as Miss Desjardin, while horror royalty Matthew Lillard (Scream, Five Nights at Freddy’s) is running the show as Principal Grayle.
Flagan’s Flare for Stephen King Stories
This is not the first time Flanagan has tackled a King adaptation. He is also behind Gerald’s Game (2017), Doctor Sleep (2019), and The Life of Chuck (2025). He’s even reportedly developing a new take on The Dark Tower.
With Flanagan’s unparalleled gift for emotional devastation, a massive expansion of the lore, and King’s blessing, this is easily one of the most anticipated horror events of 2026. Keep your eyes peeled for the official trailer, and maybe skip the school dance.
