Fans of the classic Young Frankenstein are excited! FX is nearing a pilot order for a brand-new project inspired by Mel Brooks’ iconic 1974 comedy masterpiece, The Producers. While plot details are still under wraps, the project is currently titled “Very Young Frankenstein.” Which promises a fresh take on the classic tale of reanimation.
An Impressive Team Behind the Scenes
And the creative team behind this sounds electrifying! Mel Brooks himself will serve as an executive producer, alongside his producing partner Kevin Salter, Deadline reports. Joining them is an impressive roster of talents from FX’s hit series “What We Do in the Shadows.” Which includes Stefani Robinson, Taika Waititi, and Garrett Basch.
Robinson is set to write and serve as showrunner for the project. Waititi will direct the pilot, ensuring a unique and probably hilarious vision. Michael Gruskoff, who produced the original film, will also serve as executive producer. 20th Television is the studio behind this exciting venture.
A Comedy Legend Reimagined
The original Young Frankenstein film, co-written by Brooks and starring Gene Wilder, is widely celebrated as one of the best comedy films ever made. It follows Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (pronounced “Fronk-en-steen”), who travels to Transylvania after inheriting his infamous grandfather Victor Frankenstein’s castle. However, he soon finds himself continuing the family business, attempting to bring a dead body back to life.
The film’s legendary cast included Wilder, Marty Feldman, Cloris Leachman, Teri Garr, Peter Boyle, and Madeline Kahn. Brooks previously adapted the movie into a successful stage musical, much like he did with “The Producers.”
Should “Very Young Frankenstein” go to series, it would be the latest of Brooks’ beloved films to get a television update. Hulu recently aired the sketch comedy series “History of the World, Part II,” which served as a follow-up to his 1981 film “History of the World, Part I.”
