If you’ve spent any time on the creepy side of the internet over the last few years, you already know about the yellow-wallpapered, fluorescent-humming nightmare that is the Backrooms. Now, A24 is bringing that digital urban legend to the big screen this May.

Two new videos, posted by Backrooms Movie Updates on X, were shared after the site spotted them on Pluto TV. They play out like retro commercials for the movie’s location, introducing the main character.

Don’t Go Into the Basement

Written by Will Soodik (Ash vs. Evil Dead), the film follows an employee (Chiwetel Ejiofor) at a furniture showroom named Cap’n Clark’s Ottoman Empire.

A bizarre, glitchy doorway inexplicably appears in the basement of the showroom. Naturally, people end up stepping through and getting plunged into a massive labyrinth. In this endless maze of empty rooms, the laws of physics are broken, the lighting is aggressively yellow, and you are definitely not alone.

The Internet Prodigy Behind the Camera

The coolest part about this project? It is directed by Kane Parsons, the teen YouTube prodigy who went viral over his 2022 short films. They sparked an internet craze and amassed over 190 million views.

True to its lore, the trailer reveals that Parsons is brilliantly weaving raw, unsettling, analog VHS-style found footage directly into the feature film’s narrative.

A Heavy-Hitting Cast & Crew

A24 went all out, putting together a powerhouse cast of heavy hitters and indie darlings to wander through the maze. The cast is led by Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave). Renate Reinsve (The Worst Person in the World), Mark Duplass (Creep), Finn Bennett (True Detective: Night Country), and Avan Jogia (Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City) round out the cast.

The producing credits read like a “who’s who” of modern horror royalty. That includes Chernin Entertainment, 21 Laps Entertainment, James Wan’s Atomic Monster, and Osgood Perkins’ Phobos.
