Sorcery Blending elements of dark folklore and revenge horror, Chilean-set Sorcery (Brujeria; Mexico/Germany/Chile, 2023) finds 13-year-old indigenous girl Rosa Rain (Valentina Véliz Caileo) seeking justice after her father is savagely killed when the head of the German colonist family for which she has been working has his dogs attack him. Brazilian Horror ‘Lacuna’ Possesses New Trailer

The Brazilian horror Lacuna possesses a new trailer ahead of its release sometime later this year. While it looks great, the trailer is tame compared to the film and does not show that the movie is a real gorefest. Filmed in just two weeks during the pandemic, the film, directed by Rodrigo Lages, centers on a mother-daughter relationship. Sofia’s (Loren Comparato) life is shattered after her mother, Helena (Kika Kalache), has a severe car accident. When her mother returns home, Sofia discovers that her mother is no longer herself and has been possessed by a sinister entity. When doctors can not help, Sofia is forced to seek answers beyond science. Laila Zaid, Guilherme Prates, Priscila Maria, and Charles Fricks co-star in the film that features English subtitles. birth/rebirth A provocative take on the Frankenstein mythos, director Laura Moss’s birth/rebirth finds pathologist Rose (Marin Ireland) — who doesn’t have the time or desire to deal with your petty life problems — forming an uneasy alliance with midwife Celie (Judy Reyes) when the latter discovers that Rose is using Celie’s recently suddenly deceased daughter Lila (A.J. Lister) in an experiment designed to bring the dead back to life. Plenty of horror films have questioned how far parents will go to bring back a child who has passed away, but the questionable ethics displayed by the two main characters here go beyond the usual supernatural bargains and such, making them more monstrous than any reanimated corpse. Moss, who cowrote the screenplay with Brendan J. O’Brien, shows assured direction, and Ireland and Reyes have terrific chemistry together. One of the finest fright-fare features in recent memory that involves teenagers making contact with spirits of the deceased is Talk to Me (Australia, 2023) from codirectors Danny Philippou and Michael Philppou. I finished this film about 24 hours ago and haven’t stopped thinking about it since — that’s how much impact it has had on me. Not content with mere ouija boards and seances, a group of teens has begun communicating with the dead using a ceramic-covered embalmed hand of a medium and sharing the wicked results on social media. New Religion Writer/director Keishi Kondo’s haunting debut feature New Religion (Japan, 2022) offers a unique take on ghost stories. Focusing on existential horror and a dread-filled atmosphere rather than easy jump scares and CGI effects, Kondo unveils the tale of Miyabi (Kaho Seto), a divorced woman whose daughter died when the youngster was watering plants on the balcony and fell off while Miyabi was reading a book indoors. On a decidedly downward spiral, Miyabi begins work as a call girl, taking over a mysterious client when one of her coworkers begins a murderous spree. From its blood-soaked, batty beginning to its harrowing third act, writer/director Kenneth Dagatan’s dark fairy tale horror feature In My Mother’s Skin (Philippines/Singapore/Taiwan, 2023) is a masterful tale of terror. Tala (Felicity Kyle Napuli) is a young girl living in The Philippines at the end of World War II, when Japanese forces are still occupying the county. Her father has been accused of stealing gold from the Japanese and leaves to meet with American contacts.
