Nicolas Cage has been busy over the past several years, releasing at least one film a year, including the highly anticipated Longlegs, which just opened in theaters. One of the recently released films is the monster movie Arcadian. That’s what we are here to talk about. Arcadian is set in the near future when life has been forever changed. Paul and his two sons, Thomas and Joseph, have been living a half-life—tranquility by day and torment by night. After the sun sets, they face the unrelenting attacks of deadly creatures. The movie is directed by Benjamin Brewer and written by Mike Nilon, who also happens to be Cage’s manager/agent. Arcadian has some severe issues, the biggest of which is that it is a monster movie with dreadful monsters. They look ridiculous. The CGI is terrible—the worst I’ve seen in a while. That says a lot. These things look stupid, not scary. They do this fast thing where their mouths open

Demi Moore, known for her roles in films like G.I. Jane and Ghost, plays an aging star who goes to disturbing lengths to recapture her youth in the twisted first trailer for the body-horror The Substance, directed by Coralie Fargeat, known for her brutal 2017 film Revenge. Hugo Diego Garcia, Dennis Quaid, and Margaret Qualley also star in the movie that centers on Moore’s Elisabeth Sparkle. Elisabeth is a celebrity aerobics show host fired on her 50th birthday due to her age. Desperate, Elisabeth doesn’t think twice when a mysterious scientist approaches her. She accepts his offer. She is given an experimental chemical to revert her to her “younger, more beautiful, more perfect” self. However, the dream Elisabeth has been sold will soon turn into a nightmare. The trailer gives viewers blink-and-you’ll-miss-them shots of Quaid’s creepy salesman and a neon-green vile labeled “Activator.” We also see a lot of leotards, and Elisabeth’s younger version is covered in blood. Fargeat won

Writer-director Chris Nash makes his feature debut with In a Violent Nature, now out on VOD. Everyone has been talking about the movie, so I decided I needed to see it myself. That’s an hour and a half, and I’ll never get back. In the movie, a couple of friends find an old locket. When one takes it, it resurrects Johnny, a vengeful spirit driven by a 60-year-old crime. He’s hungry for payback and fixated on reclaiming the stolen locket. But his wrath doesn’t stop there. Anyone unfortunate enough to cross his path becomes meat for the grinder in his methodical, one-by-one slaughter spree. Where do I start with this movie? I guess the villain is as good of a place as any. The hulking killer looks halfway decent. He spends half the movie just walking through the woods—stomping around like the Jolly Green Giant in no less than seven scenes, just wandering about the woods with the camera in

If you watch J-horror, you have likely heard of director Kôji Shiraishi. He has 95 directing credits on IMDB, with his most well-known film to Western audiences perhaps being the 2016 phantom face-off Sadako vs. Kayako. With his latest feature House of Sayuri (AKA Sayuri; Japan, 2024), he pulls off remarkable magic with tonal shifts to deliver a wholly satisfying haunted house spookfest. Head of the household Akio Kamiki (Sen Kajihara) has worked hard to move his wife, three children, and parents from a cramped city apartment into a spacious house all their own. Alas, the angry spirit of Sayuri, a girl who was murdered there, isn’t as happy about the situation as the new residents, and she would just as soon see them dead. Teen son Norio (Ryoka Minamide), his grandmother who suffers from dementia (Toshie Negishi), and his new school friend Sumida (Hana Kondo) — who happens to have a special sense about supernatural occurrences — need to

Remember way back to like last year when Severin released their collection of Italian Gothic fright flicks in a handy box set called Danza Macabra? Well, they went and released a second volume (and because I’m woefully behind, a third set as well… review coming soon) so lets do the film by film bag, shall we? First up is Antonio Margheriti’s (Yor: The Hunter From the Future) and Sergio Corbucci’s (1966’s Django) Castle of Blood from 1964, doubtless an answer to then-popular Edgar Alan Poe adaptations coming from legendary producer Roger Corman… hell, Poe even appears as a character in this very narrative (played by The Bloodstained Butterfly’s Silvano Tranquilli)! Speaking of Poe as we are, he’s balls deep into describing the final act of his story Berenice to his chum Lord Thomas Blackwood (Umberto Raho, The Last Man on Earth) when they are joined by journalist Alan Foster (Georges Rivière) who believes that the supernatural is a load of
