Spoiler-Free Review: HE WENT THAT WAY (Tribeca Festival 2023)  

What do you get when you cross a serial killer saga, a road movie, a thriller, some comedy, a variation on an odd-couple buddy film, and a celebrity chimpanzee? In the case of He Went That Way (U.S., 2023), the answer is a film that lacks clear focus but is nevertheless entertaining throughout. He Went That Way features a title card that proclaims that the events in the film mostly happened. The real-life story involved animal trainer Dave Pitts and the actual chimpanzee Spanky traveling with hitchhiker and serial killer Larry Lee Ranes. Pitts gives an accounting of his tale during the end credits, which also feature a clip of Spanky performing in The Ice Capades. For the fictionalized version, animal trainer Jim (Zachary Quinto) is traveling America’s Route 66 with his beloved chimpanzee Spanky, who was once the toast of highly rated television variety shows and live performances but who has fallen out of favor in the film’s 1964

‘Spider Baby’ Remake Scares Up Its First Trailer

Writer-director-producer Dustin Ferguson is back with his latest film, the remake of the 1967’s Spider Baby (The Maddest Story Ever Told). We recently got the exclusive on the first stills and a look behind the scenes, which you can see here. The film has now wrapped, and its first trailer has been released. The original film, directed by Jack Hill, centers on a caretaker who devotes himself to three demented siblings after their father’s death. Short Film Review: Canary (2023)

A group of pals; Ignacio (Matthew Mitchell Espinosa), Nev (Andrew Hayden Kang), Enoch (Thaddeus Newman), and George (Kiyoshi Shishido) by name, head out for a ‘lil R&R at a remote cabin located deep within the wicked woods. Along for the ride is George’s cousin Albert (Barron Leung), a meek fella who unfortunately becomes the victim of severe, alcohol-fueled abuse by those mentioned up yonder when George exits the scene to find some help. Why the need for assistance you may ask? Well, seems the world outside the cabin walls seems to be the subject of some sort of invasion by creatures unknown, and now ol’ Al is faced with a big-ass die-lemma; end his torment by either puttin’ a murder on those bullies, or face whatever in the fuck is lurking outside… One thing you can say about Canary’s director Taka Tsubota; he’s got a good eye (two of them most likely) for making a film look like a million

Called “Chilling,’ by HorrorFuel’s Joseph Perry (review), the award-winning revenge horror-thriller Peppergrass is coming to Digital this week. In the film, during the pandemic, a pregnant restaurateur tries to rob a priceless truffle from a reclusive World War 2 veteran in the movie from filmmaking duo Steven Garbas and Chantelle Han. Producers include Grant Cooper, Bennet De Brabandere, Michael Flax, Steven Garbas, Chantelle Han, Philip Irwin, Michael Kraetzer, Nicolas Onetti, and Gayna Theophilus. Throughout its festival tour, Peppergrass has continued to take home awards and nominations, including Best Feature and Best Performance at the 2021 Nightmares Film Festival, nominated for Best Thriller and Best Supporting Performance, and nominated for Best Picture at the 2021 Blood in the Snow Film Festival in Toronto. Groundhog Day Style Horror-Thriller ‘Jagged Mind’ Debuting On Hulu

Out this week, Hulu’s new LBGTQ+ horror-thriller Jagged Mind, from director Kelley Kali, sees a woman plagued by visions and a sense of reliving her days over and over. Written by Allyson Morgan, the film stars Maisie Richardson-Sellers and Shannon Woodward, Jagged Mind sees a woman plagued by blackouts and strange visions that lead her to discover she’s stuck in a series of time loops, possibly related to her mysterious new girlfriend. The film, which made its world premiere at the American Black Film Festival, is based on the short film “First Date,” which was included in the first season of 20th Digital Studio’s “Bite Size Halloween.” The feature is part of the studio’s existing slate of horror features for Hulu, including Grimcutty, Matriarch, Clock, and the upcoming films Appendage and The Mill. 20th Digital Studio developed Jagged Mind with David Worthen Brooks, Arbi Pedrossian, and Jenna Cavelle as executive producers.
