Around the world tales of bizarre, wolflike creatures have been told for centuries. Everyone has heard stories about werewolves, but In 1992 the worldwide phenomenon came to the forefront in the United States when residents of Elkhorn, a small town in Wisconsin, began encountering a “Werewolf” on a rural road just outside of town. Those unlucky enough to see the “beast of Bray Road” for themselves were left forever changed by the ordeal. The story quickly gained national attention. The regional media flocked to the area as monster hunters descended on the tiny hamlet. Before long, sightings of similar figures were erupting all across the Midwest. Nearly three decades later, Small Town Monsters investigates the story of the Beast of Bray Road… and it’s hidden history. As recently as last week, a major news item about the discovery of an unidentifiable dog-like creature shot and killed in rural Montana went viral. Uber-nerd Nico (Javier Bódalo…in an impressively cartoonish performance) is dead set on losing his virginity on New Year’s Eve…and it seems like that is precisely what will happen when he encounters Medea (Miriam Martín) a Super Coug on the prowl who invites him home to her ultra filthy, bug infested apartment (but hey, any port in a storm, amirite?). It’s a banner day for ol’ Ryan (Chase Joliet); he’s just out sawing some wood (as one does) when a man informs him he has inherited a house from his biological father…a dude he thought bit the big one multiple years ago. Before long Ryan, with his pregnant fiance in tow, heads out to the bucolic coastal town and takes up residence in the spacious abode. Once there, R-man begins a slow slide down the slippery slope of going batshit insane as he begins to unravel his family’s dark history and the blight upon the land on which the mansion sits. Packed with equal parts family drama and slow burn horror, Inheritance (the debut feature for Director Tyler Savage) is a well paced decent into madness and implied supernatural shenanigans. A deranged, shades sportin’, killer (David Wilkinson) on the lam walks right on into the home of a teen named Joey (Joseph Shaughnessy) like the mother fuckin’ cool breeze he is. While there he dons a Freddy Kruger mask and waits for J-man to get home…which when said event occurs leads to a full on WWE style brawl that nothing can stop (the sound effects alone are worth whatever you pay for this DVD)…not even the arrival of Joey’s friend (How do we know he’s our hero’s friend? A woman with brain cancer (Margarethe von Stern…who also co-wrote the feature) enters a surreal version of the Egyptian underworld (this time comprised of bucolic fields, swamps, and gaudy rooms and industrial settings). She soon becomes obsessed with the mummification of deceased animals (at times overseen by a frog…could this be a manifestation of the fertility goddess Heqet? Not a stretch when you hear what happens to our terminal heroine next…) before being mummified herself by the god Anubis (this time represented by a man, naked from the waste down and adorned with a fetishistic mask that roughly resembles a canine countenance). Before long our protagonist encounters multiple versions of herself (or so they seem) as she attempts to reconcile her mortality and sense of self. The Day of the Purple Sun is more of an “experience” than a traditional motion picture. The film is comprised of aesthetics more than a standard narrative, and the end result challenges the viewer
