The Conjuring 2 is everywhere, social media, TV, and is still number one at the box office for its second week. I’ve been dying to see The Conjuring 2. Last night, I made the hour-plus drive to the nearest theater to see it for myself, and I was not disappointed.
Directed by genre genius James Wan and starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as the real life legendary paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, The Conjuring 2 takes on two real life paranormal events.
The Conjuring 2, based on a true story, delves into the Enfield Poltergiest. But the film begins with the Amityville investigation. The Amityville haunting began in real life when the Lutz family moved into the home once owned by the DeFeo family and began experiencing paranormal events, which inspired The Amityville Horror. On November 13, 1974 police discovered the bodies of six members of the DeFeo family shot and killed in their home at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York. The DeFeo’s oldest son Butch was arrested and convicted of murdering his entire family with a .35 Marlin rifle. During the trial he tried to convince the court that he was possessed by an evil spirit during the murders. The Jury did not believe him. He was convicted of six counts of second-degree murder.

In The Conjuring 2, we see Lorraine (Farmiga) psychically enter the night of the murders to see Butch pull the trigger, while she was participating in a seance. Lorraine also sees an evil entity in the house that appeared as a nun. After she and Ed leave the house she urges him that they must stop investigating paranormal events because she had a vision of his death. Unfortunately, the nun followed them home.
A priest from the church comes to them a few days later pleading for their help and requests that they travel to England to investigate the “strange happenings” at a home in Enfield. Ed convinces Lorraine that they will just go to observe, not knowing that the nun would be connected. Reluctantly, Lorraine agrees. The two arrive at the home of the Hodgson family to discover that a single mother and her four children are supposedly under attack from a poltergeist. The youngest daughter, Janet, is the focus of the activity which includes levitation, shadows, and much, much more. Janet has a spirit speaking through her of a 72-year-old man named Bill who lived and died in the house before they moved in. But there is a problem, the other investigators on the scene think that the family is faking the haunting. When the other investigators leave, Ed and Lorraine may be the family’s only hope.
Don’t worry, I’m not going to tell you any more of the story. I won’t ruin it for you and I can guarantee that our reviews NEVER spoil an ending.
James Wan and the cast have really exceeded my expectations. My hope was that The Conjuring 2 would be equal to or better than the original 2013 film, which was fantastic. Surprisingly, 2 was better. Between the incredible story that Carey and Chad Hayes created, Wan’s direction, the cast’s performances, the special effects, everything balanced perfectly. I thought long and hard about it and I could not come up with one thing, in my opinion, that would have improved the film. As far as the cast goes, Wilson and Farmiga did a wonderful job, as always. But Madison Wolfe, who played Janet, really made the movie. At such a young age, she is already so talented. I was very impressed by her. As for the entities in The Conjuring 2, I look forward to finding out more about the Nun, whose spin-off is already in the works.
If you haven’t seen The Conjuring 2, I urge you to do so. You will not regret it! And if you’re wondering just how scary it is, I’ll put it like this: The row in front of me at the theater was filled with Fraternity guys, who screamed like little girls through half the movie. Seriously, it was just embarrassing. I should also mention that man in a theater dropped-dead this week while watching it. And yes, it did get me a few times. I’ll be honest, I have missed that feeling. It has been so long since movie made me think twice about turning off my bedroom light or even made me jump. Thank you to James Wan and the cast and crew. This movie reminded me of why I fell in love with the horror genre.
Oh, one more thing, do not get up and leave as soon as the movie is over. There are cool things that play through the credits, including real photos and recordings from the Warren’s original investigation.
