Blu-ray Review: FLCL: Progressive/Alternative (2018)

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this blog post. The opinions I share are my own. The original FLCL (pronounced “fooly cooly”… just go with it) was a completely batshit insane coming of age tale featuring a young dude named Naota just trying to get by in the city of Mabase… too bad an alien named Haruko runs his ass over with her vespa, smacks him with her super charged guitar, and discovers a portal in Naota’s head can unleash robots created by Medical Mechanica. See what I mean by “batshit”? But under it all this was the story of a kid who was forced to grow up too fast coming to terms with his lost youth in order to become a well-adjusted adult. Flash forward twenty years, and we now have not one, but two sequel series, Progressive and Alternative by name (both available on one handy-dandy Blu-ray release

Legendary Horror Manga ‘Uzumaki’ Gets Anime Adaptation

If you ask anyone who reads manga which artist makes good horror mangas, you’ll most likely be pointed in the direction of Junji Ito whose stories and the images that accompany them are legendary and frightening. On the opening day of the Crunchyroll Expo 2019, it was announced that Ito’s popular story Uzumaki, will be getting a four-episode anime adaptation. The series will be directed by Hiroshi Nagahama who is known for directing the anime series adaptation of the supernatural adventure Mushishi. Colin Stetson who composed the soundtrack for the film Hereditary will be composing Uzumaki’s soundtrack. Uzumaki is Japanese for “spiral”, in the manga the story revolves around (no pun intended) fictional town where the citizens are tormented by a curse where spirals are appearing in everyday objects and driving people insane to the point that either they turn into snails OR die with their bodies twisted in a spiral. In 2000 a live-action film adaptation was released as

‘Family Guy’ Took A Stab At Making A Horror Film

Shows like The Simpsons, American Dad, and Family Guy have all aired great horror themed episodes and parodies of our favorite genre films and series. In season 14, episode 4 of Family Guy, titled ‘Peternormal Activity’, Peter and the gang took a stab at writing a horror movie. Not only did they come with a few ideas that played out like short films, they even payed homage to that famous scene in the first episode of The Walking Dead when Rick woke up to find the hospital was filled with zombies. While trying to find the right atmosphere for writing the film they decide an abandoned Asylum would be the perfect place. The problem is, it is said to be haunted by a killer with a hook hand. Of course, things go sideways and the guys are left in a tough situation. Don’t worry if you missed the episode, you can find the entire series on Hulu. Here’s a clip

Rob Zombie To Play A Douchebag Vegan Cult Leader On Mr. Pickles

On June 5th Rob Zombie will be making a cameo on Adult Swim’s twisted cartoon series Mr. Pickles. For those of you have never seen to series, it centers on The Goodman Family’s dog, Mr. Pickles. Tommy thinks his dog is the best, but Grandpa is obsessed with proving the dog is an evil killer. The show features a ton of gore, S&M, and extremely mature content. Rob Zombie will be lending his voice to the character of a “douchebag vegan cult leader”. Zombie is not a douchebag in real life, but he is a vegan. Zombie announced his role via Instagram earlier this week with the caption “This Sunday On Mr. Pickles check me out as the douche bag leader on a Vegan Cult #robzombie #mrpickles #vegan”. Be sure to tune into Adult Swim this Sunday.
