A Whole New Thing: When a Remake Isn’t a Remake

It’s Not A Remake The Thing, 2011, is NOT a remake. It is a prequel. I just did more than the entire Universal Studios marketing department with that clarification. John Carpenter got royally screwed on his 1982 masterpiece. Some call The Thing his greatest film. Others, like me, call it one of the greatest films ever made for any genre. Carpenter’s film was buried in 1982 by a candy pilfering alien and Spielberg. Between a lackluster marketing campaign by Universal Studios and America’s pop sugar desire for heart glowing aliens, The Thing, 1982, never really had a chance. Carpenter himself saw the handwriting on the wall after exiting a plane to giant advertisements for ET: The Extraterrestrial. “We’re done,” he lamented. However home video and cable gave his film a new life, and eventually the tortoise caught up and passed the alien. Today, Carpenter’s film is regarded as timeless and as mentioned, by many, his best. The film is deserving

Cynema: Ed Wood–Hollywood’s Whipping Boy

No Respect Apparently Michael Medved, the respected film critic gets the credit with dubbing Edward Wood, Jr. the “worst director of all time” by referring to Wood’s crowning film achievement, Plan Nine From Outer Space as perhaps the worst motion picture ever made. This is not only to come to the late Mr. Wood’s defense, but to also show how off the mark Mr. Medved was in his 1980 book The Golden Turkey Awards. Wood is the antithesis of Cynema–his passion and love for film makes him one of Hollywood’s greatest directors. Say what you want about Plan Nine, Bride of the Monster or Glen or Glenda…bad films, yes. Bad directing, absolutely. However Ed Wood was not a cynic. This column will show why films like Jaws The Revenge, Godzilla 1998 and other big budget films are far worse than anything Ed Wood ever put out, including Plan 9. By many accounts, including his own, Plan 9 From Outer Space

Ridley Scott’s Prometheus 2 Entering Pre-Production

During an interview for the September issue of Total Film Magazine, with director Ridley Scott the statement was issued “He begins shooting Prometheus 2 in January.”. ‘Prometheus’ (2012) was part of the world that began with Scott’s brilliant 1979 film ‘Alien’. ‘Prometheus’ was not a sequel or prequel to ‘Alien’, but more of an expansion on the universe. In the film a group of scientists travel to a new world, following the clues that the once great civilization, who called the planet home, may be the linked to the origin of the human race. ‘Prometheus 2’ in now in early pre-production. The word is, the script is still a work in progress, so it could be a while before we can expect to see the film in theaters. The good news is both Noomi Rapace (Elizabeth Shaw) and Michael Fassbender (David) will be returning to their roles.

Alec Gillis’ Horror Film ‘Harbinger Down’

‘Aliens’, ‘AVP’ and ‘Tremors’ are just a few of the movies Alec Gillis and his special effects company Amalgamated Dynamics (StudioADI) have worked on. Now Gillis has added writer and director to his resume. Gillis’ film ‘Harbenger Down’ will be out later this year. In ‘Harbinger Down’ a group of graduate students are in route to the Bering Sea to study the effects of global warming on a pod of Orcas, when the ship’s crew dredges up the remains of a Soviet space wreckage containing the frozen remains of a cosmonaut. What the crew does not know is that the Russians had experimented with tarigrades, microscopic creatures that can withstand the effects of space. The creatures survived, but were effected by the radiation in space. Now the crew has been exposed to the mutated microscopic beings. ‘Harbinger Down’ stars ‘Aliens’ actor Lance Henriksen, Matt Winston (A.I. Artificial Intelligence), Giovonnie Samuels (Freedom Writers), Winston James Francis (Little Boy) and ‘Whiplash’ actress

Graffiti Artist JPS Leaves His Mark On The World

Some people see graffiti as nothing more than low brow, illegal, acts of vandalism on the walls of buildings, however there are many who see it as form of self expression. I belong to the later, I see graffiti as works of art. There are few graffiti artists as good as the artist simply known as JPS. When walking the streets of the U.K., you are likely to come across one of JPS’ masterpieces. His pieces frequently include figures from horror movies, while others contain humor and puns and musicians, such as Eminem and Notorious B.I.G. or cartoons. His canvas ranges from walls, rocks, signs, pretty much anything he can paint. JPS also now sells small pieces on Ebay. JPS is quoted as saying “…just trying to leave my mark on the world” and man has he ever. He’s earned quite a following. His artwork is even showing up in the background of commercials, like the one in the commercial
