Dark Secrets by Matthew W. Grant

Dark Secrets by Mattew W. Grant is a book I found through one of my horror writers groups. Mr. Grant was trying to find readers/audible listeners in exchange for Amazon reviews, and I have a 45 minute (one way) commute to my day job, so I’m always looking for new audio books to check out! This was my first audio book since “reading” The Art of Asking by Amanda Palmer last December, also via long car treks, so clearly I’m not an audio book connoisseur. My last semi-horror audio adventure was Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book, so I felt obligated to step away from that family for a little while. The Numinous by Tristan Michie

The Numinous by Tristan Michie could most easily be classified as a science fiction-thriller, but it definitely has some horror and suspense elements thrown in. Although I made contact with Michie in a writing group, I was interested in reading The Numinous based on the premise, alone. One of my favorite films is Event Horizon and I couldn’t help but see the resemblance in the book’s concept. Book Description: Light years away from home drifts a cold, bleak ship; seemingly void of all life……. Markus Clyde woke from his Stasis in a lonely, dark room, dimly lit by the emergency power. With not another soul in sight. In his confused and disorientated state, he desperately tries to figure out what has happened, why was he here? Where are the rest of the crew? Spectre Show by Shaun Avery & David Broughton

Spectre Show #1 is an interesting independent comic that I found out about when speaking with the comic’s writer, Shaun Avery about the horror anthology project I’m currently working on. The description of the comic provided on the Comicsy website, when combined with the cover, piqued my interest. Fortunately, he and artist/letterist/cover artist David Broughton sent me a digital copy to review and share with you, and I’m back with the results! Comic Description: SPECTRE SHOW #1. Inversion by Charles Scott

Inversion by Charles Scott is a short story by up and coming writer Charles Scott. The book description offered only a slight insight into what the book might be about, so naturally I was curious. Book Description: A dark ritual begins a journey with no end in sight… The debut short story of author Charles Scott. Overall Review: 4.5/5 My only dislike about this story was the fact that it was so short. Granted, I realize that when something is presented as a “short story” that one shouldn’t go in expecting a tome, but I’m unaccustomed to seeing short stories offered in their own right on Amazon that are less than 10 pages in length. With that being said, I thoroughly enjoyed “Inversion”. Scott’s tone was delightfully dark and sinister, there was plenty of violent language/disgusting imagery to satisfy my diabolical, gorehound side, and the words were generally well chosen. Zombie Fallout by Mark Tufo is a highly rated book which begins an 8 volume series of the same name. The series has 4.4 of 5 stars, so I went in expecting good things. Mutation by Nerys Wheatley is the first book in the Twenty-Five Percent series which takes a completely different take on what we think of as a zombie apocalypse narrative. Zombies aren’t just brain eating death machines, there are other ways that the virus can influence their physiology and behavior. Those who survive infection by zombies are referred to as being a “White-Eye” based on their discolored eyes and are marked for life as second class citizens despite their improved abilities. As They Rise by J.M. Wilde

As They Rise by J.M. Wilde is not the typical YA zombie book, but that is because J. M. Wilde is not the average independent author. As They Rise is a novella which was originally released on Wattpad. The novella has undergone vast revisions in order to produce a publishable work, as have the other two complete novels which complete the series. While available for free the series became a Wattpad featured story, was featured on The Huffington Post, and gained over 3 million combined reads. The author, J.M. Wilde was kind enough to send me a copy of the novella to review with you in honor of the impending book release. Needless to say, I was very curious. I’m always excited to read a series when I know there are already several installments completed, plus finding one outside of the U.S. is always an adventure, so it was an added bonus to find a series with such high praise

Love and Decay Vol 1, Season 1 by Rachel Higginson

Love and Decay Volume #1 (Episodes 1-6 of the first season) by Rachel Higginson is a book I have been meaning to read for a while. It was recommended to me months ago by a reader during Women in Horror month and I’m just now getting the chance to circle back around to it. As of this post, the book is available for free on Kindle. (I seem to plug kindle a lot, but it’s what I use and I love the fact that I can read books online or on my cell phone with the FREE Kindle Reading App. If you like another medium feel free to recommend it in the comments or to me on Twitter!)
