Movie Review: ‘Relic’ Tackles The Horrors Of Dementia In Unique, Terrifying Way

Normally, when I review a movie I try not to give away too many spoilers. This time, I feel like it’s necessary to do the movie justice. Consider this a warning. Directed by Natalie Erika James who co-wrote the film with Christian White, Relic‘s official synopsis reads as: “A daughter, mother, and grandmother are haunted by a manifestation of dementia that consumes their family home.” The synopsis does not do the film justice. Yes, Relic is a horror movie, but it is also so much more. It is a commentary about the horrors of dementia and the terrifying process of a loved one losing themselves and becoming a husk of who they once were, as well as the toll the disease takes on the entire family. Imagine slowly losing who you are, losing your memories and there’s nothing anyone can do to stop it. That’s scarier than anything any film could really capture, but somehow Relic comes close. The entire

There Is A Darkness Growing In The New ‘Relic’ Clip

We got a new clip from writer-director Natalie Erika James‘ haunting horror film Relic ahead of its July release. The clip teases that there is a dark entity growing. When elderly mother Edna (Robyn Nevin) inexplicably vanishes, her daughter Kay (Emily Mortimer) and granddaughter Sam (Bella Heathcote) rush to their family’s decaying country home, finding clues of her increasing dementia scattered around the house in her absence. After Edna returns just as mysteriously as she disappeared, Kay’s concern that her mother seems unwilling or unable to say where she clashes with Sam’s unabashed enthusiasm to have her grandma back. As Edna’s behavior turns increasingly volatile, both begin to sense that an insidious presence in the house might be taking control of her. All three generations of women are brought together through trauma and a powerful sense of strength and loyalty to face the ultimate fear together. Co-written by James and Christian White, the film stars Emily Mortimer, Bella Heathcote, and

Woman (In Horror) Crush Wednesday: Kristina Klebe

Greetings my Little Monsters! I am so pleased you’ve all returned to help me celebrate another wonderful Woman of Horror. I do have to admit that I feel remiss in my duties, having waited so long to write about this immensely talented woman. So, without further adieou, I present to you, Kristina Klebe. Kristina was born in New York City, but would grow up making the rounds with her family spending time in New York, France, Germany and Italy. The time spent growing up abroad allowed her to become fluent in the three aforementioned foreign languages. By the time she was in high school, Kristina had become a pianist and competitive equestrian. However these activities would have to take a back seat so that Kristina could commit more fully to her true love of acting. Kristina was granted early admission to Dartmouth, where she would pursue a major in Politics with a minor in Theater and Film Studies and graduate

‘Dementia’ Coming To Select Theaters This December

War Veteran, George Lockhart (Gene Jones) must deal with his estranged family, while facing dementia. George’s son Jerry (Peter Cilella) and his granddaughter Shelby (Hassie Harrison) persuade him to hire a live-in nurse, not knowing she is hiding a sinister secret. ‘Dementia’ stars Gene Jones of ‘The Sacrament’, Peter Cilla (Resolution), Marc Senter (Red, White & Blue), Graham Skipper (Almost Human), Molly McQueen (Carjacked), and Tony Denison from the series ‘The Closer’. Producers Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz made the statement “Our goal with Dementia was to create a new, unique experience in psychological dread and terror, having more in common with films like Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? or Repulsion than the latest ghost/found footage/torture movie. A horror film with real characters, drama, and tension, with scares coming from suspense and atmosphere, rather than jump scares and general gratuity. If Contracted made people afraid of being intimate with strangers Dementia will make them afraid to trust people altogether.” IFC
