Artist Spotlight: Giuseppe Balestra

A little while back I did a review of the new fantastic Ghostbusters Art Book, a collection of amazing artists paying tribute to the iconic movie. In my review, I listed some of my favorite pieces, the poster by the incredibly talented artist Giuseppe Balestra. I feel that Giuseppe’s artwork deserves a more in-depth look. Born in Rome and raised in South Italy, the artist prefers using pen and inks, cross-hatching and stippling, before eventually combining digital color, drawing inspiration from literature, movies, especially horror and fantasy. I like to create illustrations in which the darkness of the shadows stands in contrast to the light. They’ve been called “melancholic, mysterious and poetic. I’ve always loved doing art since I was a child, always experimenting with all kinds of media. I published my first work in late 2015 in The Lovecraft eZine vol.36 and since then I’ve been doing it professionally, working on internal illustrations and covers for books, posters, and

Filming has now begun on director David Lee Fisher’s remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent film Nosferatu. The role of the iconic vampire, Count Orlok has been cast. Amazing actor Doug Jones will play the role. Jones As Count Orlok Jones’ most recent role was that of the creature in Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water, but you might also recognize Jones from Hellboy as Abe Sapien or in Pan’s Labrinth as the “Pale Man”. The original, considered the first true vampire film ever made, is an unauthorized adaption of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula”. Names were changed in the film due to the studio’s inability to obtain the rights. It follows a young woman’s supernatural quest to not only save her lover’s soul but to save the entire world from the “shadow of infernal darkness.” The new “remix” of Nosferatu: The Immortal Vampire will be created with a mixture of new footage and colorized digitally recreated backgrounds from the original

Another ‘Nosferatu’ Remake Is One More Nail In The Coffin Of Genre Creativity

Nosferatu- this is a word you’re all familiar with, isn’t that right my Little Monsters? The word has about as many explanations regarding its meaning and origin as there have been films made about the creature the word represents. Frankly, fans of vampire movies aren’t likely to care much about the word’s true origin, as much as they will care about sub-par movie representations of their favorite blood sucking creatures of the night. One can safely say that Vampire movies have always been something of a cash cow for studios. Especially since, for better or worse, filmmakers are always finding new ways to keep said subject matter alive, or perhaps undead would be a better way of putting it. Of course this doesn’t stop the studios from trying to squeeze every last cinematic drop of blood they can from the king of the vampires himself, Count Dracula. The most recent attempt at telling the Dracula story was the origin piece

Making us wonder if Eggers still has plans to remake the classic that is the unofficial adaption of ‘Bram Stoker’s Dracula’. It seems that he does. During a recent conversation with Indiewire, Eggers confirmed that the project is still happening [It’s shocking] to me. It feels ugly and blasphemous and egomaniacal and disgusting for a filmmaker in my place to do Nosferatu next,” Eggers admitted. “I was really planning on waiting a while, but that’s how fate shook out.” He continued. “Nosferatu has a very close, magical connection for me. Though if I were to make the movie 17-year-old Rob was going to make of Nosferatu it would have been something between like The Nightmare Before Christmas and Sin City, whereas this is going to be the same approach as The Witch, where 1830s Biedermeier
