Brazil’s Fantaspoa Fantastic Film Festival Announces Its Virtual Version for 2020 and Its Incredible First Wave of Genre Titles

Brazil’s Fantaspoa Fantastic Film Festival has announced that, because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, its sixteenth edition will be held online and completely free of charge, with more than 110 genre features and shorts geo-blocked to Brazilian viewers but with digital versions of the festival’s popular lectures and masterclasses available free to cinema lovers around the world. The event is slated to run July 24th through August 2nd, 2020. Fantaspoa joins other genre-film festivals around the world in moving to a virtual version this year in these uncertain times. The fest’s move comes courtesy of an unprecedented partnership with Darkflix, a Brazilian video streaming service aimed at fantastic genre productions. The opening film of Fantaspoa’s sixteenth edition will be Keola Racela’s Porno, which has already won over audiences at SXSW, Fantasia, Sitges, and FrightFest. You can read Horror Fuel’s review here. The closing films of the festival’s sixteenth edition will be dual co-productions of Fantaspoa Productions: Skull: the Mask and

Movie Review: Porno (2019)

It’s 1992 and it’s Jesus o’ clock at a small town movie house owned by religious fanatic Mr. Pike (Bill Phillips). But it’s all in a days work for Chastity (Jillian Mueller), projectionist Heavy Metal Jeff (Robbie Tann), and ushers Abe (Evan Daves), Todd (Larry Saperstein), and Ricky (Glenn Stott)… and after hours they are rewarded with watching a free flick, but the current hits of the day are quickly forgotten once a freak-ass hobo breaks into the joint leading them to discover a stash of porn. Before you can say missionary position, the gang watches one of the skin-flicks and unleashes the succubus Lilith (Katelyn Pearce). Sex and violence ensue. Produced on a lower budget with an inexperienced cast, Porno manages to be funny, shocking, and surprisingly touching. Admittedly, things get off to a dicey start though as our pious teens are grating from the get-go, but they calm their tits soon enough… especially after Lilith makes the scene

Atlanta’s Buried Alive Film Festival Offers Witches, Werewolves, and Weirdness

The 2019 edition of Atlanta’s Buried Alive Film Festival is chock full of outstanding, outrageous horror features and shorts from around the world. The fest is scheduled for November 13–17 at 7 Stages Theatre. Following are the features that I am most looking forward to seeing, either for the first time or once again. My thoughts in italics follow the fest’s official descriptions for each film. Antrum: The Deadliest Movie Ever Made Dir. Michael Laicini and David Amito – USA – 95min Antrum, a feature length film shot in the late 1970’s, is cursed. In 1988, a movie theatre in Budapest that was screening the film burnt to the ground, killing the 56 people who were in attendance. This incident follows the inexplicable deaths of a number of film festival programmers that had received Antrum as a submission and died shortly after watching the film. These events culminated with a riot during an exhibition in San Francisco, after which the
