Movie Review: Prodigy (2018)

Erik (Cory Kays) is livin’ the sad-sack lifestyle thanks to the loss of his wife Emily (Adrianne White)…a lifestyle that leads to that ol’ classic; self medicatin’! Adding to the fun is his estranged son, who makes with the demands; like carting his ass to a undisclosed location (try slammin’ that one up in your GPS) to receive a message from upon high that can save humanity…so you know, absolutely no pressure there. Will our father/son duo be able to save the world and more importantly heal their fractured relationship? Look, I’m going to throw this out right up front…while Prodigy definitely has some thriller elements and that whole “end of the world” situation that has been featured in plenty of genre flicks; this film is two things above all…a family drama, and a “faith based film”, so this is definitely not anything that I would ever choose to watch on my own, but thems the brakes sometimes. A Young Girl’s Hidden Supernatural Talents Come To Light In ‘Prodigy’

After its highly-successful run on Amazon, the psychological thriller Prodigy makes its premiere on Netflix later this month as well as On Demand. In the film, “A discrete branch of the military calls upon psychologist James Fonda to take the case of a dangerous patient, nine-year-old Ellie. As their session begins, the young girl dissects Dr. Fonda’s unconventional methods, revealing her genius-level intellect. Only by challenging her to a battle of wits does Fonda begin to unravel the supernatural mystery surrounding Ellie — a deadly secret that threatens to destroy them both.” Prodigy wrapped an eventful festival run last year, accepting invites to nine festivals, including trips to Cinequest, Fantaspoa (Brazil) and Santa Cruz — where the film took home Best Narrative Feature honors. The film carried that success into its digital release, drawing a broad audience on Amazon, and maintaining a fresh Rotten Tomatoes score. Written and directed by Alex Haughey and Brian Vidal, the film stars Richard Neil

Movie Review: Prodigy (2018)

On the skids psychologist James Fonda (Richard Neil…who we recently interviewed right here) is called in to one of your garden variety top secret government facilities by an old classmate named Olivia (Jolene Andersen) to assist in examining Ellie (Savannah Liles) a whip smart telekinetic girl. Of course those that run the facility want to carve Ellie up like a Christmas goose to see what makes her so damn special. Making excellent use of a small cast and only a handful of locations (4 by my count, with interiors used to clinical and claustrophobic perfection), Prodigy is an impressive low budget sci-fi thriller. Neil and Liles deliver strong performances, their relationship grows believably, and the plight of young Ellie is an engaging one (if a bit derivative of King’s Firestarter here and there…minus the fire of course), and contains both strong emotional content, well-done visual effects to illustrate our young protagonists psychic powers, and a mounting tension as her fate looks
