The Pronouns of Fandom

Disclaimer: Sports, film, music, and art will do more to unite a nation than politics. All of these, collectively known as “entertainment” allow people a sense of belonging, identity and sharing. They can represent the best of us as a species. All can inspire, amaze and make us and make us better people. Notice I left out any reference to “ownership.” Grammar Nazis love to focus on the improper use of “You’re” and “Your” and “They’re and There.” I suggest they look into the misuse of certain pronouns. Fans of any medium don’t seem to understand “Us” and “Them” or “We” and “They.” A sports example: The Philadelphia Eagles won Super Bowl 52. The players, coach, the staff that worked on a daily basis to make the machine run–THEY won the Super Bowl. YOU reading this did not. To see “We did it!” type posts online is another example of a spectator world that confuses viewing with doing. To be

Suspension of Disbelief in Film Dysmorphia

Suspension of Disbelief? Sit through this annoying video up until the 5:00 mark. The fan boy “host” in the above video talks in attention deficit tweets. The video uses jump cut “hip” editing to spill out unabashed respect and love for the CGI technique that brought Peter Cushing back from the grave in “Rogue One.” He spends the first five minutes elaborating on the incredible work and effort it took create this digital feat. The “host” proclaims, “I think they pulled it off.” Then, being a true “fan” he takes a swipe at all of the work done by Industrial Light and Magic, effects artist, John Knoll and director Gareth Edwards. “Now Tarkin didn’t look a hundred percent authentic,” the “host” whines, “especially the movement of his mouth, but…he looked better than any other time this has been used.” What movies has this guy made? What has happened to film audiences? In the never ending quest for “realism” in special

Clever Girl’s Top 5 Films of 2015

This year was a fantastic year for film! “Mad Max,” “Jurassic Park,” “Star Wars,” and “The Terminator” all appeared once again on the big screen. Horror fans had an opportunity to enjoy remakes such as “Poltergeist,” and see sequels to “Insidious” as well as “Paranormal Activity.” We had the conclusion to “The Hunger Games” and finally got to see the works of Guillermo del Toro with “Crimson Peak,” and the rebirth of the iconic horror-thriller director M. Night Shyamalan with “The Visit.” Did any these films make my favorite five list? Read on to find out! _________________________________________________ 5.) “Dinosaur 13” Being from Chicago, I’ve had the opportunity to visit the Field Museum regularly. For those who do not know, when you first step into the main hall you are greeted by “Sue,” the worlds most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex fossil. I had no idea that there was a story and a battle behind this impressive fossil. “Dinosaur 13” is an impressive

Just Say No To George Lucas (Episode II)

Prequels It’s tempting to leave the brilliant Mr. Plinkett Star Wars prequel reviews to suffice for this post. I think they should be used in film classes everywhere. Red Letter Media’s brilliant look at what went wrong with the franchise is without equal and perfectly nails everything wrong with three installments that scarred memories and almost derailed a franchise. The critiques are raunchy and in terrible taste but they are also funny as hell and exquisite. See all of them HERE There are multiple parts for each film, but every single one of them is worth it. Watching the Plinkett critiques was far more entertaining than watching the actual films. &list=PL5919C8DE6F720A2D#action=share To someone who’s under the age of 20 and says his his least favorite film in the series is the Empire Strikes Back because “it was the most boringest one,” can I suggest you shut this review off right now before I carefully explain how much of a fucking

Is George Lucas THE PHANTOM MENACE? EPISODE I

You Won’t Have George Lucas To Kick Around Anymore George Lucas has been kicked around for the facial he gave us with the Star Wars prequels. While he’s taken a new drubbing in the media (Mostly as to why he’s not directing new Star Wars films/not asked to), it all adds to the hype for the upcoming Episode VII, but take a look: https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/01/13/george-lucas-star-wars-episode-vii_n_6462960.html https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/why-george-lucas-wont-direct-841972 https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/01/13/george-lucas-star-wars-episode-vii_n_6462960.html https://www.digitalspy.com/movies/star-wars/news/a442537/george-lucas-i-wont-have-much-involvement-in-star-wars-7/ Before I go into the Cynema aspect of Lucasfilm, I want to ask all of the film fan experts how are YOUR movies are doing? You know the ones you don’t write? Don’t direct? Don’t produce? Let me be more specific: the ones in your heads, on your hard drives or in the reams of your unpublished fan fiction? Right. “Fans” have done more to ruin the enjoyment of the Star Wars franchise than George Lucas. Their rabid love for fantasy product has taken what was once a fun, cinematic experience and turned

Consuming Cynema PART I

Go Shopping A persistent misconception immediately after the 911 attacks in 2001 is that President George W. Bush urged Americans “to go shopping.” This was not the case. Over the years it’s been simplified into that message. In reality The President said this, “It’s to tell the traveling public: Get on board. Do your business around the country. Fly and enjoy America’s great destination spots. Get down to Disney World in Florida. Take your families and enjoy life, the way we want it to be enjoyed.” George Bush, White House Archives Not once was the word “shop” or any form of it used. This is not a political defense. Rather, something in that speech to a shocked nation did stand out to me, and can be applied to the entertainment industry. While we were not directly urged to “go shopping” the simplistic picture of consumerism congruent to the picture of American life was apparent. We have accepted an image of
