Visionary filmmaker Richard Stanley, who brought genre films such as Hardware, Dust Devil and The Island of Dr. Moreau, and several documentaries, took us inside his latest film The Color Out of Space (review) during our interview. In The Color Out of Space, a meteorite lands in the front yard of a farm. Nathan Gardner (Nicolas Cage) and his family find themselves battling a mutant extraterrestrial organism as it infects their minds and bodies, transforming their quiet rural life into a nightmare.” Q’orianka Kilcher, Joely Richardson, Madeleine Arthur, Brendan Meyer, Jullian Hillard, Elliot Knight and Tommy Chong star alongside Cage in this beautifully executed film. Horror Fuel: “I had the pleasure of seeing The Color Out of Space it is fantastic.” Richard Stanley: “I’m so pleased. Creating it was a labor of love.” Horror Fuel: “The film is from a different perspective than Lovecraft’s story. I think it worked really well for the film.” Richard Stanely: “I’m a huge Lovecraft

A diver named Matt (played by John Ashley and his sideburns) is brought aboard a ship and kidnapped by it’s crew, led by the Aryan Steinman (played by Jan Merlin and his horribly dyed hair), to a remote island where a Doctor (Charles Macaulay, who you cats would know as Dracula from William Crain’s classic Blacula) is performing bizarre experiments to turn beasts into men (now before you scream “This is a rip-off of The Island of Dr. Moreau!”, let me tell you that this film is blazingly original as the doctor here is named “Gordon”). Anyway, ol’ Dr. G tells Matty that he personally selected him to become a super-being, which leaves our hero unimpressed, so he decides to escape from this island hell. Lucky for him, the Doctor’s gorgeous daughter Neva (Pat Woodell) decides to help him along with the off-the-wall manimals locked in the doc’s dungeon basement…and with that back-up what could possibly go wrong? As derivative

Wednesday is upon us again my Little Monsters and with that our weekly celebration of a wonderful Woman of Horror. This week’s lovely lady just seems to have been born to be part of our beloved horror genre…almost as if she stepped right off the pages of a Gothic horror story. She’s a distinctive beauty whose facial expressions can effortlessly create a semblance of innocence or malevolence. Of course by now you know I am obviously speaking of the legendary Barbara Steele. Barbara hails from England, the birthplace of Gothic horror. More specifically, she was born in the Merseyside town of Birkenhead, just across the river from Liverpool. Barbara began honing her craft while studying at London’s Chelsea College of Arts, before moving on to study at the Sorbonne in Paris, France. She made her small and big screen debuts in the same year with an appearance on the BBC One series, Dial 999 and then with an uncredited part

We are midway through another week, my Little Monsters, which means it’s time again to focus on a wonderful Woman of Horror. The focus this Wednesday is on a lovely and talented woman, who I personally wish were more of a fixture in the horror genre, Miss Fairuza Balk. Fairuza Alejandra Feldthouse is a California girl by birth, having been born in Point Reyes, CA to Solomon Feldthouse and Cathryn Balk. So taken with his baby daughter’s blue eyes, Solomon exclaimed, “Fairuza!” (which is the Farsi word for turquoise), and thus she had her name. She began her childhood, growing up in a commune in Cloverdale, CA with her mother, before they later moved on to Vancouver, British Columbia. It was at this time that Fairuza made her television acting debut in the ABC television movie, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. This movie is a personal favorite of mine and my brother, and we watched it over and over on
