Film & Game Composer Penka Kouneva Tells Us About Her Latest Projects

One of the most important keys to how we perceive films, shows, and games is the music that sets the tone of each scene. I recently spoke with composer and musician Penka Kouneva about her past and present projects and how she found her way to music and to the US. You may not realize it, but you have heard Penka’s work many times before in films like Elysium, Act of Valor, Angels & Demons, Freaks of Nature, Heroes and Legends and the recently released genre film Devil’s Whisper. Horror Fuel: “How did you become a composer?” Penka Kouneva: I have been drawn to music since early childhood. My mother is a teacher of music theory for a college. There was always music in our house. She took me to concerts. I felt emotionally drawn to it when I listened to music as a child. I always imagined stories and settings. Music for me was always associated with storytelling. That’s

Attack of the Rotten Tomatoes

The Sites Rotten Tomatoes ruined the summer 2017 boxoffice. The New York Times published this article on film review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes (read here). The site has been around almost twenty years. I was first introduced to it back in 2003-2004. As the Internet gained more of a foothold, Rotten Tomatoes expanded its base; and now, according to this article, its power to influence box office performance. Sounds like those parents who subscribe to the “not my kid” mentality. Couldn’t possibly be US, it has to be the school, society…anyone but us and the bad product we made. I wrote a similar article, which could be a companion piece (here) a few months earlier when another finger pointing article on RT got some press. Can a website that amasses critical reviews have so much impact on a film’s box office performance? Hollywood spins it both ways whenever convenient. When it comes to a franchise like Transformers, the studios love

‘The Mummy’ Coming To Digital, Blu-ray, And DVD

Universal’s reboot of The Mummy is coming to Digital this August, followed by its Blu-ray and DVD release this September. In the film, Tom Cruise (Mission Impossible) goes head to head with the legendary Universal Monster, The Mummy. Unlike in most revamped tales of the mummy, this time Cruise’s character faces off with the mummy of Princess Ahmanet, played by Sofia Boutella. Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert an ancient princess, whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters. In the film we will also see Dr. Jekyll, played by Russell Crowe, teach Cruise’s character Nick

Is ‘The Mummy’ As Bad As Everyone Says?

Yes. Yes it is. ………But I think its worth watching anyway, as a lesson in how not to make a horror movie, if nothing else. Studio horror rightfully gets a lot of shit, and The Mummy might just be the perfect example of a production studio that doesn’t have a fucking clue what horror fans want. But what this disaster-piece really does is show how little faith studios have in horror at all. Despite films like The Conjuring grossing over $300 Million dollars, film producers still don’t believe horror has the drawing power that more traditional Blockbuster and action films do. So rather than anything close to a horror movie, The Mummy is instead a big budget Tom Cruise action film, the start of a cinematic universe no less (on a related note, has anyone outside of Marvel even come close to a halfway watchable cinematic universe?) Never mind the fact that the mummy is a monster with literally thousands

Javier Bardem In Talks To Star As Frankenstein For Universal

The new Universal Monsters shared universe is filled with stars, and I’m not talking about the kind that twinkle. The first of the films, The Mummy, is set for a summer premiere with stars Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe. Johnny Depp has signed on for The Invisible Man. Scarlet Johansson may swim with the Creature From the Black Lagoon which has already hooked Aquaman scribe Will Beall. And Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson may be growing his hair out for The Wolf Man, to be penned by David Callham. Word is, Javier Bardem, whose latest role was as Captain Salazar in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, is currently in talks to play Frankenstein’s Monster in both a film focusing on the character and in a second film, Bride of Frankenstein, where if the studio has its way he will co-star alongside Angelina Jolie. Beauty and the Beast director Bill Condon will be in the director’s chair for

Russell Crowe Transforms Into Dr. Jekyll In The New Featurette From THE MUMMY

A new sneak peek featurette has been unveiled by Universal Pictures for their remake of The Mummy. In the video we see Russell Crowe transform into Dr. Jekyll as he schools Nick (Tom Cruise) on “evil”. We also see what appears to be a vampire skull, a possible link to Dracula. While Dracula Untold (2014) featured Luke Evans as the famous blood-thirsty character, it bombed, so a new Dracula is in the works. Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.
