News came earlier this week that a film based on The Winchester Mystery House was in the works. Now Deadline has reported that Oscar Award-winner Helen Mirren (The Queen) has joined the film and will star as Sarah Winchester. Winchester is set to begin filming early next year. Daybreakers’ Michael and Peter Spierig will be directing the paranormal thriller, based on their own script.
The film follows Sarah Winchester, heir to the Winchester fortune. After her husband and daughter die suddenly, she becomes convinced that she is cursed and haunted by spirits killed by “the gun that won the west”. She consulted a medium and began construction on The Winchester Mystery House in 1884. After 38 years of construction, the 7-story, 24,000-square-foot home had a staggering 160-rooms, which will actually be featured in the film.
