Ever so often a horror movie takes the blame when a real-life crime is committed. This time The Purge is being blamed for a series murders by the hands of 19-year-old Johnathan Cruz. Cruz randomly killed three people between May 12th to 15th in Indiana. Cruz has been arrested and charged with seventeen counts, including first-degree murder.
The reference to The Purge stems from a text message found on Cruz’s cell phone by police. One of the messages stated “I Purge every night now..since Im dieing someone else has to.” Reportedly a witness that knows Cruz told police that he had told her about his attacks and that he had mentioned “purging”.
This isn’t the first time that The Purge has been blamed for a crime. Back in 2014, reports were made when mysterious posters were popping up all over Louisville that a real purge was set to take place. Come to find out, a 12-year-old was behind the whole thing. Luckily, most people in the area were not stupid enough to actually participate.
The last installment of The Purge franchise, The Purge: Election Year will open in theaters on July 4th.
