Principle photography has begun in Toronto on the sci-fi thriller Code 8 after raising $1, 722, 409 on Indiegogo. Starring and produced by cousins Stephen and Robbie Amell, the film is directed by Jeff Chan, Variety reports.
Stephen Amell is best known for his role Oliver Queen/Green Arrow on the series Arrow, while Robbie Amell stars as Raymond/Deathstorm in The Flash series. Both series air on The CW.
Fast and the Furious actor Sung Kang co-stars alongside Kari Matchett (Maudie), Greg Bryk (Fronteir) and Aaron Abrams of Hannibal.
The film is set in a world where 4% of the population is born with varying supernatural abilities, but instead of being billionaires or superheroes, most “specials” face discrimination and live in poverty, often resorting to crime in a world now monitored by drones, guardians, and police. Robbie Amell’s character is struggling to pay for his ailing mother’s health treatment and is lured into a lucrative criminal world by Stephen Amell’s character, who works for a drug lord (Byrk).
Robbie and Stephen Amell serve as executive producers along with Lee Kim of Resolute Films, Mary Anne Waterhouse of Blue Ice Pictures, and Thick Water Entertainment.
A 10-minute short film was released as part of the Indiegogo campaign, check it out.
