Chris Columbus (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone) has finished his script for Gremlins 3. Everything indicates we will witness a much darker tale than with the first two films. There is even a rumor that Gizmo is in danger and might be killed in order to protect the human race from the Gremlins the adorable creature can spawn.
Columbus himself has said that the script is “as twisted and dark as anything”. He has stated that he “wanted to go back to the really twisted sensibility of the first movie.”
I’m really proud of the script. It is as twisted and dark as anything, so we’ll see. It’s always a budgetary conversation when we’re going to shoot it. I wanted to go back to the really twisted sensibility of the first movie. I found that was a very easy place for me to fall back into and start writing again, so hopefully we’ll see that movie soon.”
Don’t worry about the film being CGI heavy. He says that “without a doubt,” there will be “Minimal CGI.” So that cute little Gizmo and those nasty Gremlins will be still be puppets. “CGI will enable us to remove wires and make the puppeteers’ lives a little easier.”Columbus said.
Word is, Columbus won’t be directing but he will serve as producer along with executive producer Steven Spielberg.
Warner Bros. originally hired screenwriter Carl Ellsworth (The Last House on the Left) to write the third installment, which was meant to be a reboot. Thankfully, Columbus re-wrote the script as a direct sequel. Hopefully, we will see Gremlins 3 soon.
