Months after it was announced that Jordan Peele will be making the “spiritual sequel” to Candyman with Aquaman actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II set to star, fans are still concerned that Tony Todd, who made the character Candyman iconic, wouldn’t be reprising his role as the supernatural killer. Fans can relax, Todd is returning!
While at Nickel City Con in New York, Todd revealed his return and had this to say:
Out of the blue I got a phone call from Jordan Peele. We’re still waiting for the contract, but the way he explained it to me was that it’s gonna be applause-worthy moments. That’s his words. No matter what happens with that, it’s gonna just put renewed attention on the original.
With Nia DaCosta in the director’s chair, for the film. He spoke about the confusion and the horror community’s reaction when Abdul-Mateen‘s casting was announced.
Well, it’s been slightly misreported,” DaCosta said. “I can’t say what’s happening in the film because we want it to be a surprise, but he’s not replacing Tony Todd. That’s been reported, and I was just like, ‘I don’t know what to say about this. This is not right.”
Teyonah Parris has also joined the cast and will play the girlfriend of an art dealer obsessed with the legend of Candyman.
The movie will return to the neighborhood where the legend began, where Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood.
Jordan Peele wrote the script along with Win Rosenfeld and will produce MGM’s Candyman which set to open in theaters on June 12, 2020.
