If you are true crime fan odds are you’ve heard about serial killer Rodney Alcala. In 1978, during one of his most lethal years, the killer took the time to appear on “The Dating Game” where host Jim Lange introduced him as a “successful photographer.” Alcala was even chosen as the winner of that episode by Cheryl Bradshaw, luckily the woman decided not to go out with him because she got creepy vibes. That may have been the best decision of her life. His appearance on the cringe-worthy series earned him the nickname “The Dating Game Killer.”

Up-and-coming filmmaker Chloe Okuno is making a name for herself in the horror genre. Not only does she have an upcoming A24 film and a Stephen King adaptation in the works, but she’s also making a true-crime thriller about Alcala’s appearance on “The Dating Game” for Netflix.

Titled Rodney & Sheryl, the film stars Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect franchise) as Cheryl Bradshaw, the real-life woman who picked the serial killer on “The Dating Game.”

The script by Ian MacAllister McDonald. Roy Lee and Miri Yoon are producing for Vertigo Entertainment, alongside J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules for BoulderLight Pictures. Stephen Crawford, Russ Posternak, Industry Entertainment’s Andrew Deane, and Kendrick will executive produce.

Alcala, born Rodrigo Jacques Alcala Buquowas, is a serial killer and rapist who was convicted of five murders in California from 1977 to 1979 and two killings in New York and was the suspect of several more killings in Washington, San Fransico, and Wyoming. He was convicted in 2016 of another murder he committed in 1977.  Alcala enjoyed taking photos of his victims in explicit poses while he “toyed” with them. He would strangle them until they passed out then would wait for them to wake up and would repeat the process multiple times.  Over 1,000 pictures of women, men, and children were found in his home. Today, many are still unidentified. In hopes of discovering those still unidentified, the police have posted 900 of the photos online. Today, Alcala is on Death Row in California.
