It has now been announced that Luis Guzmán (Traffic, Code Black) has officially been cast as Gomez Addams in Netflix’s upcoming live-action Addams Family series titled “Wednesday,” from legendary filmmaker Tim Burton. Guzmán joins previously announced actress Jenna Ortega, who is set to portray the titular role of Wednesday Addams.
The 8-episode series is being described as a coming-of-age comedy that will be a sleuthing, supernaturally-infused mystery. “It will chart the titular heroine’s years as a student at the peculiar Nevermore Academy as she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, while also thwarting a monstrous killing spree terrorizing the local town and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships of the strange and diverse student body.
“Wednesday” was created and written by Al Gough and Miles Millar, who are also serving as showrunners. Andrew Mittman, Kevin Miserocchi, Kayla Alpert, Jonathan Glickman, and Gail Berman are executive producing, with MGM and United Artists also attached to produce.
Tim Burton (Beetlejuice, Corpse Bride) is making his TV directorial debut with the series which he will both direct and executive produce.
“The Addams Family” patriarch was first played by John Astin in the 1964 original TV series, followed by Golden Globe and Emmy winner Raul Julia in the 1991 and 1993 films as well as Tim Curry in the 1998 movie. Recently, Gomez was voiced by Oscar Isaac in Universal Pictures’ 2019 animated film whose sequel, The Addams Family 2, will be released this October.
