One can not survive on blood and gore alone. Looking for something still in the realm, but a little different, I sauntered my way up to my TV and hit play, delving into the drama-filled southern world of supernatural with V.C. Andrews’ Landry Family four-movie collection.

The trailer for the film combo is what first drew my attention and I thought it might be something I could get into, and honestly, I was right. Filled to the brim with drama, intrigue, the supernatural world lingers just below the surface with the subject of hoodoo and voodoo often coming up.

The main story at the heart of the franchise revolves around Ruby (Raechelle Banno), a young, kind woman raised in the bayou by her grandmother after her mother passed during childbirth. Ruby had never met her father, but on her grandmother’s deathbed, she shares not only the identity of Ruby’s father but that she also has a twin sister. When Ruby’s drunk of a grandfather tries to sell her to one of his friends Ruby is left with no choice but to search for her father. Her dreams come true when she discovers that he wants her. Unfortunately, her sister and stepmother are cruel and horrible which makes for a lot of drama.

The films have a romantic air and remind me of films and series of the 40s and 50s. It may have something to do with the fact that it’s set in the South. Let me explain, there are two types of “The South”, there’s the redneck, mud bogging side then there’s the world of southern tradition, ball gowns, and sipping fancy drinks on the front porch. The movies are set in the latter of the two worlds.

The first two films were really enjoyable, however, the third is where things “went south” for me. You see, the series features heavy doses of incest. We’re not talking about distant cousins falling in love here, we’re talking about half-siblings, a brother and sister in love. That my dears feels just plain gross. I’m not talking about a kiss or two (which is still nasty), I’m talking about marriage. These are two of the main characters. The fact that the movies glorify it is just weird. I wasn’t intending to watch the entire series, and while the first two movies were honestly good, the third made me a bit nauseous. I got halfway through the third before I was like, “Nope. This is not what I signed up for.” And that’s sad because I was really into the collection up till then.

If you can look past the incest and want to get the collection for yourself, please do. I will not judge you for it. It is available now on DVD, from Lionsgate.
