The Lambert family’s decades-long trauma train has finally left the station, making way for a wickedly fresh, bone-chilling era of terror in Insidious: Out of the Further.

Now haunting theaters nationwide, this sixth installment swaps out old survivors for fresh blood. The sequel centers on Gemma (Amelia Eve), a single mom moving back into her childhood home with her young daughter (Island Austin). But instead of just finding creaky floorboards and bad memories, Gemma unlocks a volatile supernatural talent that utterly shatters the rules of the entire franchise.

A Game-Changing Power in the Dark

Unlike previous protagonists who fought desperately to seal the threshold and escape the Further, in the latest installment, Gemma possesses a uniquely dangerous gift. She can naturally astrally project into the spirit realm. Still, she also holds the power to permanently pull ghastly entities out of purgatory and anchor them directly into the physical world. This unprecedented connection flips the series’ lore on its head, transforming traditional defensive survival into high-stakes, aggressive spiritual warfare.

Legendary Mentorship and Horror Heavyweights

Gemma is not forced to navigate this nightmare alone. Franchise cornerstone Lin Shaye returns as the spirit of Elise Rainier, stepping in as a guide to help Gemma master and weaponize her volatile gift. Directed by Jacob Chase (Play) from a screenplay co-written with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (The Conjuring 2), the film is backed by horror titans James Wan, Leigh Whannell, Jason Blum, and Oren Peli.

Co-starring Brandon Perea, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Laura Gordon, and Sam Spruell, Insidious: Out of the Further is playing in theaters now!

A Franchise Recap

Before you head to theaters to experience a new dose of dread and terror, we have a recap of the entire franchise to remind you of the horrors of past events.

Insidious (2010): The Astral Nightmare Begins

The franchise kicks off with young Dalton Lambert slipping into an unexplained coma. Psychic Elise Rainier reveals Dalton isn’t medically sick.  His soul is astrally projecting into “The Further.” This leaves his body open for a terrifying lipstick-faced demon to claim. His father, Josh, ventures deep into the dark realm to rescue his son. However, he returns with a horrific parasitic spirit hitchhiking inside his body.

Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013): Unmasking the Bride in Black

Picking up right after Elise’s tragic death, the Lambert family struggles as Josh’s possessed body slowly turns against them. The crew uncovers the grim history of “The Bride in Black.” She is a murderous spirit named Parker Crane who manipulated Josh from childhood. While Josh’s physical body goes full madman in the real world, his true soul teams up with Elise’s spirit in The Further to break the curse once and for all.

Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015): The Man Who Can’t Breathe

Rewinding to a prequel before the Lambert family crisis, a grief-stricken Elise comes out of retirement to help teenager Quinn Brenner. Quinn accidentally summoned a soul-stealing entity known as “The Man Who Can’t Breathe” while trying to contact her late mother. This terrifying chapter officially establishes Elise’s iconic partnership with quirky, tech-nerd ghost hunters Specs and Tucker.

Insidious: The Last Key (2018): Elise Confronts Her Past

Diving deep into Elise’s personal history, this chapter forces her back to her abusive childhood home in New Mexico. There, she faces “KeyFace,” the ancient demon she unwittingly released as a young girl. By defeating the creature and making peace with her family’s dark trauma, Elise solidifies her destiny as the guardian against the horrors of The Further.

Insidious: The Red Door (2023): Closing the Lambert Legacy

Nine years after the original hauntings, a grown-up Dalton leaves for art college. But his repressed memories resurface when he paints the titular Red Door. With demons hunting them both once again, Dalton and Josh must re-enter The Further to face their shared trauma. Finally, they seal the red door and put the Lambert family saga to rest for good.

Where to Watch

Unfortunately, the original and sequels are not all streaming in one spot. However, we know where you can find them. The first three Insidious films are now streaming on Peacock. However, you can find the other two on HBO Max. And of course, you’ll have to head to theaters to see Insidious: Out of the Further.
