After watching writer and star Scott Hamm Duenas’s new film, Rebroken, also starring Saw franchise actor Tobin Bell, I sat down with Scott to discuss his movie, whose big twist you’ll never see coming (Spoiler Free).

The film centers on Will, a devastated father who spends time between court-ordered grief counseling and drinking himself into oblivion. He repeats the cycle of despair daily without plans to stop until he meets a mysterious stranger who gives him some old vinyl recordings. After Will listens to the records, he suddenly receives messages from his recently deceased daughter. As his daughter’s communications grow more frequent, Will becomes convinced that these recordings hold the answer to bringing his daughter back from the dead. But just as he is closing in on the truth, he starts to suspect that his counseling group has ulterior motives.

Rebroken is far from Scott’s first involvement in the entertainment industry. Besides starring in, writing, directing, and producing many films, he’s had a long TV career appearing in series like “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “All American,” and the massive hit series “Cobra Kai,” and he was a reoccurring character on “General Hospital” from 2006-2020. In other words, the man knows what he’s doing. But today, we are here to talk about Rebroken.

Kelli: “Rebroken is a deep film and, you know, not giving out spoilers, but I love the Twist. I never saw it coming, which is a miracle. So, needless to say, I was impressed.”

Scott: “Good, good, good. Yeah.”

Kelli: “You know, that’s refreshing. That’s a big thing for me. I’ve seen a lot of movies, and when somebody can surprise me, that’s a major thing.”

Scott: “You just made my day.”

Kelli: “Right. I know it’s based on a short story; where did the story come from? What inspired it?”

Scott: “I had just become a father. It was inspired by that and the thought of losing a child. Everyone with a child knows that fear or even the fear of losing a father.”

Kelli: “Yeah. I was a major daddy’s girl, so I know about that. He passed away about ten years ago, so I know that whole loss thing and then losing your mind. Some people like your character go to that dark side, and others don’t. I was one of the dark side people, so I get it.”

Scott: “I’m so sorry for your loss.”

Kelli: “Thank you.”

Scott: “I understand. I’ve had some other people say stuff like,” Yo man, it just brought back some stuff.”

Kelli: “That’s definitely true. Right? And it’s also not bad when you hit those nerves and cause those emotions. Cause, you know, it’s the mark of a good movie when it makes you feel anything.”

Scott: “I think that’s why we fall, you know? And that’s why we’re so subjected to it. If you have ten people in a room, and you get four of them sad, four don’t care about any of it, and one hates it. <laugh> Like, are you kidding me? That’s what I love about it. And when you get good characters, it’s even better.”

Kelli: “Yeah. And speaking of characters, you got Tobin Bell. I’m a fan.”

Scott: “Yes. <laugh>. It’s like we were the NFL team. Hey, got the draft pick up, like, uh, list we go a little bit backup plan or this and that, but Tobin was on the ship. e sent the script, and he really, really liked it. You have an actor with that voice; it’s legendary. I was probably more excited when I got to meet him. And he’s a nice guy, and he was professional and treated our film respectfully.”

Kelli: “Yeah. He is so great with those mysterious character roles like in Rebroken. Like you don’t ever know what’s happening with him. He is incredibly talented.”

Scott: “He has those perfect steel, blue eyes and tremendous acting behind him, and his background jumps out. I love that we had him, and he’s a natural type of thriller actor. The movie is not a slasher or scary but a thriller. He’s perfect for that.”

Kelli: “Right. He is great. In my opinion, I would call the film more of an emotional horror.   Losing a kid, God almighty, is one of the most horrific things that could ever happen. That’s devastating, and that’s definitely horror.”

Scott: “That’s a great way to put it. I’m going to steal that. It’s emotional like that.”

Kelli: “I like the fact that you could tell something was up, but you weren’t quite sure what it was until that twist hit. And then I was like, “Oh, I like that.” It was quite brilliant. You caught me off, guard. That rarely ever happens.”

Scott: “I’m glad.”

Kelli: “And your character, I guess the way to explain him would be stoic. He wants to put on a hard facade, but he’s crumbling. You really feel sorry for him.”

Scott: “He definitely doesn’t want to be one of those guys in a group. I think there’s a part of him that he doesn’t want to come share, which he’s not. But yeah, he’s falling apart at the end of the day.”

Kelli: “And boy, does he ever, <laugh>. That all goes back to how you deal with grief, you know?”

So when will Rebroken be out everywhere?”

Scott: It came out on March 7th. About platforms, hopefully, some things are coming down the pipe. You can get it now on DVD.”

Kelli: “I’m a DVD person or Blu-ray person. I like to have a physical copy in my hand. I’m one of those people.”

Scott: “I just ordered mine off Amazon.”

Kelli: “Oh, awesome! I’ll get a copy. So, what’s your next project?”

Scott: “It’s in post-production now. It’s called XMas Gamble. There’s also Still Life. And I’m just trying to pick off some TV jobs.”

Kelli: “Speaking of TV, you were in one of my favorite shows, Cobra Kai.”

Scott: “I was a guard for Cobra Kai. I get into an argument and fight. It’s in season two. I was in the scene with William Zabka (Johnny), which was pretty awesome.”

Kelli: “That is awesome! I’m not going to lie. I have three ten-inch-long pet Dojo’s named Mr. Miagi, Danielson, and Johnny. Get it? They are Dojos. I thought it was appropriate. So, yeah, I’m a fan.”

Scott: I love it!”
