Ahead of its release, a new featurette for Russell Crowe’s upcoming supernatural horror film, The Pope’s Exorcist, combines the real and fictional. In a series of side-by-side shots, we see scenes from the movie compared to real clips of exorcisms conducted by Father Gabriele Amorth, the real-life Chief Exorcist of the Vatican who inspired the film and has been involved in more than 100,000 exorcisms.

The Pope’s Exorcist follows Amorth as he investigates a young boy’s terrifying possession, uncovering a centuries-old conspiracy the Vatican has desperately tried to keep hidden.

Directed by Julius Avery (Overlord), the supernatural horror-thriller stars Russell Crowe as Father Gabriele Amorth, Franco Nero as the Pope, Ralph Ineson, Alex Essoe, Peter DeSouza-Feighoney, Daniel Zovatto, Paloma Bloyd, Laurel Marsden, and Edward Harper-Jones.

The Pope’s Exorcist from Sony Pictures opens in theaters on April 14, 2023.
