With the premiere of The Last Voyage of the Demeter on the horizon this August, I sat down with makeup artist Göran Lundström to discuss the incredible transformation of Javier Botet into Dracula.
Directed by André Øvredal, the movie is based on a single chilling chapter, “The Captain’s Log,” from Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula, and tells the terrifying story of the merchant ship Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo—fifty unmarked wooden crates—from Carpathia to London. The crew boards the ship, not knowing the horrors that await them.
The Last Voyage stars Corey Hawkins (In the Heights, Straight Outta Compton) as Clemens, a doctor who joins the Demeter crew, and Aisling Franciosi (Game of Thrones, The Nightingale) as an unwitting stowaway. Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones, Clash of the Titans) as the ship’s captain, and David Dastmalchian (Dune, the Ant-Man franchise) as the ship’s first mate.
You may not realize it, but you’ve seen a lot of Lundström’s work many times before, in films like Rouge One: A Star Wars Story, The Batman, the live-action film Beauty and the Beast, X-Men: First Class, Cloud Atlas, Harry Potter, and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, and 2010’s Clash of the Titans, as well as fantastic series including “True Detective,” “House of Gucci,” and “Doctor Who.” Follow Goran on Instagram to stay up to date on his projects and more.
Check out The Last Voyage of the Demeter, which sails into theaters on August 11, 2023.
