When it comes to upcoming horror movies, one film at the top of everyone’s must-see list is director André Øvredal’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter, sinking its fangs into theaters on August 11, 2023.
Inspired by a single chilling chapter, “The Captain’s Log,” from Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula, the movie tells the terrifying story of the merchant ship Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo—fifty unmarked wooden crates—from Carpathia to London, not knowing the horrors that await the crew.
While everyone recognizes the names of the director and stars, it takes many others working behind the scene to bring movies to life. Edward Thomas, the Production Designer, is one of those people. I had the pleasure of talking with Edward about his vital role in making this film and what went into bringing the dark world of The Last Voyage of the Demeter to life.
You may not realize it, but you have seen Thomas’ work many times before. He’s behind films such as Escape Room, Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, and Monster Hunter and series such as “Torchwood,” “Doctor Who,” “Da Vinci’s Demons,” and so many more.
I hope you see The Last Voyage of the Demeter, and I sincerely hope this interview brings to light just how important the roles of those working behind the scenes are. Next time stop and be sure to watch as the credits roll and see the names of the production designers, the makeup artists, and the crews that build the sets, to name a few.
