As the 20th anniversary of the Underworld franchise approaches, the original director and franchise co-creator Len Wiseman recently dropped some hints that there is still life in the vampire/werewolf franchise yet, possibly on the small screen.
During a recent talk with Entertainment Weekly Wiseman said, “there’s a fashion that is in the works, but I can’t talk about it. But there is a future to Underworld for sure.” When asked if he was talking about a TV series, he did confirm “That’s the one I’m referring to.”
The first mention of an Underworld series came back in 2016, just ahead of the premiere of Underworld: Blood Wars. And honestly, it has the potential of being a great series, as long as Beckinsale returns as Selene.
Back in 2016 Wiseman told Collider, “Yes, there’s been a lot of conversations and even development on what that series would be. It’s really appropriate for television, in terms of how those characters can really tie in, but also become something new. It’s really an attractive space. I don’t want to put a date on it because then that’s going to be printed and it might not happen in that timeframe, but it is a thought.”
The action-packed franchise, which features five films so far, pits vampires against Lycans (werewolves) and centers on the vampire Selene, played by Kate Beckinsale. It has been a hit with horror fans, bringing in over $539 million with a combined budget of $207 million.
We’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, you can watch the franchise on Tubi and Prime Video. Here’s a look back at the trailer for the last movie, Underworld: Blood Wars (2016).
