This may be the first published game review of 2024 from us but this is actually the second with the official first review on its way on February 6th, so keep an eye out for that one! Let’s get to some exorcising with QU Byte Interactive and Mr. Skull Game Studio’s Devil Inside Us: Roots of Evil.

Devil Inside Us: Roots of Evil is about Father August Heylel, a Vatican-recognized Exorcist who is penning a letter describing his most haunting exorcist case that began in 1984 where he failed to save the family but was able to banish the evil within the house. Over the years he’s been watching over the house and the families that moved in who all have lived in peace till in 2020, the evil returned.

The controls for the game are limited and easy to remember. One of the things I wish you had in this game are meters letting you know how much health you have as well as your stamina limit because, from my understanding, Father Heylel will die if he over-runs and doesn’t take stamina pills. The dude is 74 after all.

There’s no way to control the sound in the game so headphone users beware as at times the music and sound effects will become quite loud suddenly.

A major thing about the game, and it’s mentioned at the start when you select your language options, is that there’s a bit of a language barrier with how some things are written or said. But don’t worry, it’s not a word salad of English nonsense.

Gameplaywise, Devil Inside Us: Roots of Evil involves you walking around, picking up health packs, stamina pills, and rosaries. At times Father August will have to use his crucifix to exorcise objects, or to fight demonic forces.

Overall, Devil Inside Us: Roots of Evil is OK for an indie, I beat it in 1-2 hours. There are some scares but after a while, they lose their punch. If anything, this game is a proof of concept that if they have a bigger budget and better writing, this could make a really spooky game. On my scale of 1-10, I give this one a 5.

Devil Inside Us: Roots of Evil comes out on January 25th, 2024 for PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
