James Wan, behind franchises like Saw and The Conjuring, is currently in talks to dive into the depths of Universal’s classic monster universe and direct a new take on the iconic 1954 classic horror film Creature from the Black Lagoon.

Wan and his production company, Atomic Monster, are behind the remake of the 1954 horror classic. Wan aims to create a grounded and visceral reimagining of the classic tale while honoring the original’s atmosphere and iconic Creature.

There has been a history of failed attempts to revive the Creature from the Black Lagoon, including efforts by John Landis, John Carpenter, and Ivan Reitman. However, Guillermo del Toro’s loose adaptation, The Shape of Water, was a hit, winning two Oscars.

The original film sees a strange prehistoric beast lurking in the depths of the Amazonian jungle. A group of scientists try to capture the animal and bring it back to civilization for study.

The reimagining is not the only project James Wan is working on. The first look at his upcoming horror series “Teacup” debuted at SDCC to the delight of fans. He’s also serving as producer on Blumhouse’s forthcoming horror SOULM8TE.

If you haven’t seen it or want to rewatch it before the reboot arrives, you can find the original Creature from the Black Lagoon to rent or own on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Spectrum. Here’s a look back at the original trailer.
