The new trailer for Zach Cregger’s follow-up to the wildly unsettling Barbarian, Weapons, has just dropped. And it’s serving up some serious ominous vibes. If you thought Barbarian was weird and creepy, Weapons looks like it’s cranking that dial up to eleven.

A Chilling Trailer

The trailer opens with a child recounting a day that began normal enough. However, one teacher’s classroom was empty. That’s because the night before, all the children from that class went missing at 2:17 am. They simply woke up and walked off into the dark.

The marketing for Weapons took a seriously clever and creepy turn with the launch of an in-universe website called “Maybrook Missing.” It lists “cases” of missing children in the area, with chilling text that reads, “17 Local Children Leave Home Simultaneously at 2:17 am.” Authorities are baffled by the inexplicable disappearance, which has shaken the community to its core.”

And here’s where things get interesting. Below that text, the site not only shows the clips but also has a link to a news story about a 28-year-old woman named Tess Marshall who escaped a rental property in Detroit “under shocking circumstances.” Sound familiar? It absolutely should. That’s the plot of Cregger’s Barbarian! We can only assume that Weapons and Barbarian are somehow connected from this brilliant Easter egg. Are they set in the same universe? The possibilities are both exciting and deeply unsettling.

A Brilliant Cast

The cast for Weapons features heavy hitters like Josh Brolin, Julia Garner (fresh off her werewolf turn in Wolf Man), Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, Amy MadiganAustin Abrams, and young Cary Christopher.

Coming This Summer

Weapons is gearing up to unleash its particular brand of terror in theaters on August 8th. After the unexpected brilliance of Barbarian, all eyes are on Zach Cregger to see what kind of new and twisted nightmares he has in store for us. And judging by the latest trailer, it’s going to be terrifying.
