From the visionary mind behind Oddity and Caveat, writer-director Damian McCarthy is back to haunt your weekend. His latest nightmare, Hokum, officially opens in theaters today, May 1, 2026, via Neon. To celebrate the launch, we’ve got a look at the creepy final poster and character spotlights.

A Film to Die For

Adam Scott (Severance) stars as Ohm Bauman, a reclusive horror novelist struggling with a bleak ending. He retreats to a remote Irish inn to scatter his parents’ ashes and find inspiration. However, the hotel staff shares chilling legends of an ancient witch haunting the honeymoon suite. Ohm soon finds himself spiraling into a nightmarish confrontation with his own dark past.

Scott leads a stellar cast of genre favorites, including David Wilmot (Station Eleven), Florence Ordesh (Departure), Will O’Connell (Game of Thrones), and Austin Amelio (The Walking Dead).

Hokum is a massive collaboration between Spooky Pictures, Image Nation, and Cweature Features. The production team is horror royalty. Producers include Roy Lee (Weapons), Steven Schneider (Insidious), and Derek Dauchy (Late Night with the Devil). Then, there are executive producers Ben Ross, Dan Kagan, and Rami Yasin.

Don’t Miss the Scares

Early reviews from its SXSW premiere call Hokum one of the most unsettling films of the year. McCarthy’s signature use of atmosphere and practical scares is reportedly in top form. Grab your tickets now and witness why everyone is talking about the “witch in the woods.”
