Before James Gunn was busy rebooting the Man of Steel or steering the ship as the Co-Chairman and CEO of DC Studios, he was busy unleashing flesh-eating extraterrestrial parasites on small-town America. To celebrate its 20th Anniversary, Visions Home Video is giving Gunn’s directorial debut, Slither, the royal treatment it deserves. It is getting a limited-edition 4K UHD + Blu-ray Steelbook release on June 1st.
A Love Letter to Practical Gore
Long before he gave us a talking raccoon and a sentient tree, Gunn gave us Michael Rooker as a mutating meat-monster. This 2006 cult classic remains one of the most effective horror-comedies of the 21st century, blending genuine skin-crawling terror with the dry wit that would eventually become Gunn’s cinematic signature.
The story is a classic “alien-meets-outback” nightmare: a parasite lands in a sleepy town, turns a local businessman into a walking biological hazard, and begins its mission to consume every living thing on Earth. It’s up to the town’s dry-witted Sheriff (Nathan Fillion) and a resilient local woman (Elizabeth Banks) to stop the infestation before everyone ends up as part of the biomass.
The Restoration: Approved by the Architect
This isn’t just a simple port; it’s a full-scale visual overhaul. The film has been meticulously restored from the 35mm Interpositive, with the new 4K Dolby Vision master personally approved by both James Gunn and Director of Photography Gregory Middleton. If you haven’t seen these slugs in ultra-high definition, you haven’t truly lived (or been properly grossed out).
