If you thought the “Living Dead” family tree couldn’t get any more tangled, grab a shovel. While Dan O’Bannon’s 1985 classic The Return of the Living Dead is a punk-rock zombie masterpiece, it all actually started as a novel by John A. Russo. He’s the man who co-wrote the original 1968 Night of the Living Dead with George A. Romero.
Now, Russo is returning to his original literary roots. Production is officially in full swing on Rebirth of the Living Dead, a movie that serves as a direct sequel to Russo’s 1978 novel. Forget the slapstick of the 80s movies; this is a “brutal continuation” of the Russo-style undead mythology.
Just Say No to “Trioxin Trash”
In a move that feels like a PSA gone horribly wrong, the film introduces a street drug called “Trioxin Trash.” Apparently, the side effects include a mild case of “total cellular reanimation” and a sudden, insatiable craving for grey matter.
The story follows a young couple who are attacked in the woods. They are forced to seek help from an outcast scientist. His solution, “Pain therapy,” to ward off the hunger. Because nothing cures the urge to eat your neighbor like a little bit of scientific agony, right?
Scream Queen Royalty & Indie Muscle
Directed by prolific filmmaker Dustin Ferguson (Seed: Legacy, Spider Baby), the cast list is a love letter to the VHS era If you’re a fan of “Final Girls” and genre icons, this lineup is stacked: Barbara Magnolfi (Suspiria), Brinke Stevens (The Slumber Party Massacre), Michelle Bauer (Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers), and Nathan Bexton (Go!, Nowhere) star Jennifer Moriarty (Spider Baby) and DieTrich Thrall (Lords of Acid) round out the cast.
Finishing the Fight (and the Film)
Rebirth of the Living Dead is eyeing an October 1, 2026, release date—just in time for the spooky season. The production is about 50% complete, and the team is looking for a bit of help from fans via Indiegogo to get it across the finish line.
