If you’ve been patiently waiting for director Adam Wingard to step away from the giant monster playground of the Godzilla vs. Kong universe, we’ve got good news. Wingard is returning to his gritty, blood-soaked indie roots. Onslaught is heading our way.
The maestro behind You’re Next and The Guest is officially back in the genre saddle with Onslaught. Described as a “gonzo action-horror” fiesta, the film is locked and loaded for a theatrical release via A24 this summer. The first trailer has just dropped, and it looks like a beautiful, chaotic fever dream.
The Ultimate Desert Deathmatch
The plot of Onslaught reads like a glorious, adrenaline-fueled 1980s comic book. The story kicks into high gear when a rogue squad of genetically engineered super-soldiers breaks out of captivity and vanishes into the brutal desert heat.
Standing in their way? A fiercely badass Army sniper who will stop at absolutely nothing—and unleash literal hell—to protect her young daughter.
To bring this insane vision to life, Wingard teamed up with his frequent partner-in-crime, screenwriter and producer Simon Barrett. When this duo gets together, audiences are guaranteed two things: a killer synth soundtrack and an incredibly high body count.
A Cast of Heavy Hitters and Horror Icons
The ensemble cast Wingard has assembled for this desert showdown is an eclectic mix of modern superstars, horror mainstays, and absolute legends. That includes Adria Arjona (Andor) and Dan Stevens, fresh off his roles in “The Terror: Devil in Silver.” Drew Starkey (Queer), Rebecca Hall (Godzilla vs. Kong), and MMA’s Alex Pereira.
As a massive treat for genre film buffs, the supporting roster features glorious appearances by Michael Biehn (Aliens), Reginald VelJohnson (Die Hard), and even comedy icon Eric Wareheim (Tim & Eric). It is a cast list so wonderfully bizarre that it just might work perfectly.
Expect Total “Batshit” Insanity
For anyone wondering exactly what kind of tone Wingard is aiming for here, co-star Dan Stevens has already shed some light on the situation. In a recent interview with AOL, the star gleefully promised that the new film is completely “batshit.”
Stevens teased that anyone who deeply loved the neon-drenched, dark action-comedy vibes of The Guest will find a whole lot to love in the chaos of Onslaught. Knowing the track record of this creative team, we have absolutely no reason to doubt him.
Grab your popcorn and prepare for impact. Onslaught hits theaters on September 4.
