If you thought the ghost-busting business was strictly a 9-to-5 gig, Netflix is about to prove that the real monsters only come out after the sun goes down.

Following a major reveal at Tribeca’s over the weekend, the streaming giant has officially dropped the title and neon-soaked logo for its upcoming animated series: “Ghostbusters: Night Shift.” The animated comedy-action series is officially locked in to clock onto Netflix worldwide in 2027.

The Graveyard Shift Got Graphic

According to Netflix’s official preview, “Night Shift”—a massive joint venture with Sony Pictures Animation—aims to be the definitive next chapter in the franchise’s decades-long, ghoul-catching legacy. The show promises to seamlessly blend the high-concept supernatural comedy and kinetic paranormal action that made the original films blockbusters. But with the boundless visual freedom that only modern animation can provide.

To ensure the proton packs are calibrated correctly, the series has assembled a team stacked with serious franchise pedigree.

Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan are the writing duo who successfully resurrected the live-action universe with Afterlife and Frozen Empire—are steering the ship.

The Original Ghostbuster, Dan Aykroyd, is on board to keep the spiritual energy authentic. Showrunners Ben Hibon and Elliott Kalan, alongside producer Amie Karp, round out the brain trust.

A Proud Saturday Morning Tradition

This is far from the franchise’s first time stepping into animation. Gen Xers and Millennials will fondly remember the gloriously weird The Real Ghostbusters” in the 1980s. There was also the counter-culture Extreme Ghostbusters in ’90s’90s. Both of which proved that the IP thrives when it drops the constraints of practical filmmaking.

We still have a bit of a wait before the 2027 premiere. However, fans can take comfort in knowing that the Ecto-Containment unit is in safe hands, “or “Ghostbusters: Night Shift.”There’s something strange in your neighborhood after midnight, you know who to call, even though they’re charging time-and-a-half for the overtime.
