If you thought the only rule of the Further was “don’t go toward the red light,” Sony Pictures Entertainment just blew up the franchise handbook. The terrifying new trailer for Insidious: Out of the Further has officially dropped, and it confirms that the sixth installment moves past the Lambert family’s trauma to introduce a protagonist with a uniquely dangerous set of skills.

Following 2023’s Insidious: The Red Door, which wrapped up the original family’s multi-decade haunting, this next chapter focuses on Gemma, a single mother played by Amelia Eve (The Haunting of Bly Manor). Gemma and her daughter (Island Austin) live a quiet life in Gemma’s childhood home—until a frightening encounter reveals that Gemma can naturally astrally project into the franchise’s infamous, spirit-filled realm.

But here is the kicker: unlike Elise Rainier or the Lamberts, who fought tooth and nail to keep the doors shut, Gemma possesses a wild new ability. She can permanently drag spirits out of the Further and into the real world. Talk about a terrible souvenir.

Ghostbusting with a New Set of Rules

Thankfully, Gemma isn’t entirely on her own. With the help of a friend, she manages to contact the spirit of franchise anchor Lin Shaye, whose iconic character, Elise Rainier, is back to tutor a new generation in spiritual warfare. Even though Elise canonically died all the way back in the first film, she remains the ultimate connective tissue of the universe, bridging prequels and sequels alike. This time, she is guiding Gemma to weaponize her bizarre gift rather than fear it.

This new power completely flips the script on the established Insidious lore. Previously, survival meant keeping the demons at bay and sprinting back to your physical body. Gemma’s ability gives her a level of offensive control over the supernatural that we haven’t seen before, opening up a fascinating, aggressive new avenue for the franchise.

The Creative Conjuring Behind the Camera

To make sure the transition away from the Lamberts goes smoothly, Sony assembled a certified dream team of horror heavyweights behind the scenes. Franchise creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell are back in the fold, alongside Blumhouse maestro Jason Blum and Paranormal Activity creator Oren Peli.

Jacob Chase (Come Play) is directing. Chase co-wrote the screenplay with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, the mastermind who has been keeping the Conjuring universe terrifying since The Conjuring 2.

The star-studded survival pool surrounding Eve and Shaye includes Maisie Richardson-Sellers (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow), Laura Gordon (Late Night with the Devil), Brandon Perea (Twisters), and Sam Spruell (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms).

Insidious: Out of the Further is currently scheduled to possess movie theaters on August 21. If Gemma plays her cards right, this could be the launchpad for a whole new generation of nightmares. If she doesn’t, she’ll have a very crowded living room.
