A commercial tour boat takes a handful of wealthy visitors out to a remote, strictly restricted shark sanctuary. Naturally, because this is a survival thriller, things go horribly wrong out on the open water. It’s time for you to sink your teeth into the new trailer, which reminds us that sharks don’t see us as friends; we’re food.
Shark Bait
Directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Jeff Vespa, The Bay relies on an incredibly tight-knit ensemble to sell its claustrophobic chaos. Lachlan Taʻimua Hannemann anchors the cast as Ruhan, the tour boat’s resilient deckhand. He stars alongside dynamic co-stars such as Bruce Greenwood, Megan Fox, and Josh Hutcherson, who round out the small group of passengers caught in a shifting, high-stakes battle of power dynamics and survival against the deep blue sea.
Location, Location, Location, and Practical Effects
While the harrowing narrative is technically set in the exotic waters of Thailand, local viewers will easily spot the unmistakable silhouette of Mokoliʻi (Chinaman’s Hat) looming in the background. The entire production was knocked out in a breakneck, one-month shoot. And while Kaneohe Bay is famously a natural breeding ground for hammerhead sharks, the film relied on some incredibly dedicated practical movie magic to bring its primary antagonist to life.
The crew used a hyper-realistic, weighted silicone cast of a shark fin and tail, which a brave crew member had to maneuver through the water to simulate a stalking predator manually.

You don’t have to wait until next year to watch him fight for his life, though. The Bay officially opens in select theaters and lands on major video streaming platforms on July 17. Pack your sunscreen, check your life vests, and maybe think twice about dipping your toes in the water.
