If you like your road trip served with a side of extreme splatter, your mid-July plans are officially locked in. The wizards at Unearthed Films are bringing iconic gore-maestro Olaf Ittenbach’s 2001 masterpiece, Legion of the Dead, to Blu-ray. Because Unearthed understands that true genre fans suffer from severe cinematic gluttony, they are dropping it as a packed 2-Disc Limited Collector’s Edition.

Desert Road Trips and Demonic Ultimatums

William and his sidekick, Luke, set out on a relaxing, carefree drive through the beautiful California desert. Naturally, their vacation immediately falls apart. After escaping the clutches of a notorious serial killer named Psycho Mike, they stumble into a dusty, isolated desert town.

Unbeknownst to our travelers, a mysterious man—played by B-movie titan Matthias Hues—and his sadistic henchmen are busy slaughtering the locals. Why? To construct a literal, bloodthirsty army of the damned. Things get messy when William falls for a local server. When the town gets surrounded by the undead, the villain delivers a strict ultimatum to hand her over. It’s a beautifully unhinged. It’s a fast-paced blend of road-movie attitude, early 2000s camp, and spectacular, stomach-churning practical effects.

A Breakdown of the Discs

Unearthed Films has pulled out all the stops to ensure this physical release is definitive, separating Legion of the Dead’s chaotic history across two distinct discs.

Disc One houses the unrated Festival Producer’s Cut of the film, running a lean 92 minutes. This disc is loaded with extra meat. That includes a full audio commentary track with director Olaf Ittenbach and his composer. There’s a deep-dive “Making Of” documentary. Let’s not forget deleted scenes, outtakes, and a look at the film’s festival premieres. You also get a massive photo gallery and the original trailers.

Disc Two is dedicated entirely to the coveted Director’s Cut version. Clocking in at a beefier 108 minutes and utilizing both English and German language tracks. It gives fans the complete, uncut vision of Ittenbach’s glorious, effects-heavy bloodbath.
