If you thought “Riverdale“ was unhinged when it introduced cults, serial killer genes, and time travel, hold onto your milkshakes. Archie Andrews is officially facing a literal zombie apocalypse.
Variety reports that Disney+ has officially given a full series order to “Afterlife With Archie,” adapting the critically acclaimed horror comic by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and legendary artist Francesco Francavilla. Originally placed in development back in 2025, the streamer is eyeing a spooky Halloween 2027 release window for the show.
Sabrina Spells Trouble (Literally)
So, how does Riverdale end up crawling with the undead? You can blame everyone’s favorite teenage witch.
The horror kicks off when a supernatural spell cast by a certain teenage witch backfires spectacularly, thanks, Sabrina. This unleashes an army of possessed corpses on the town. Archie and the gang are forced to fight for their lives. It’s a survival saga that tests their friendships, love triangles, and high school loyalties.
The project brings together the ultimate “Riverdale” dream team. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa wrote the script and will executive produce alongside master TV hitmaker Greg Berlanti (You, The Flash), Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, Muckle Man’s Jimmy Gibbons, and Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater. Warner Bros. Television is backing the production.
“The Comic That Started It All”
Before “Riverdale” became a seven-season cult obsession on The CW and before Netflix gave us “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” there was the 2013 Afterlife With Archie comic. This book proved Archie Comics could do blood-curdling horror just as well as wholesome teenage romance.
“This was the comic book that started it all,” said Aguirre-Sacasa. “Getting to turn Afterlife into a TV series for the amazing team at Disney+… is truly a full-circle moment and the ultimate dream project for me. Time to say a prayer for Archie, Betty, Veronica, and the whole gang, ’cause THE ZOMBIES ARE COMING!“
“Fans are going to fall hard for this new version of the gang… and maybe scream a little too,” added Ayo Davis, President of Disney Kids & Family.
Expect high-stakes survival, peak teenage melodrama, and plenty of gore served alongside those Pop’s Chock’lit Shop sundaes. Clear your schedules for October 2027 and get ready for the zombie apocalypse.
